Being a site that has many fabulous female readers, we have started a new category on All That’s Fab that spotlights the women in New York and beyond who are making major power moves and are superstars in their own right. We spotlight the guys, and feel that its equally as important to spotlight the women as well. In our first Fab Female blog, we sat down with Sarah Dash of Labelle, one of the originators of the girl group:
Growing up as a preacher’s daughter made Sarah Dash of Labelle cherish life and appreciate the things God has given her over the years. If you’re unfamiliar, Labelle, they are were a girl group that hit it big in the 70’s with hits like “Lady Marmalade” and more. This same group was also how solo artist Patti Labelle, got her start.
Each of the girls hit it big in there own right. Dash went on to produce three solo albums, that included several hit singles. She also eventually went on to tour with Keith Richards of The Rolling Stones.
Sarah Dash originally came from very humble beginnings, and throughout the years, she has remained both humble and inspirational. This same humility resurfaced after a terrible accident left her unable to walk for four years of her life. When asked how she feels today, she replied with a simple statement, “I feel blessed”.
It has been 30 years since these talented ladies have done an album together, but Labelle is one of those timeless groups. Sarah, Patti, and Nona all recently hit the studio to make their big comeback album, “Back to Now“, which includes production by notable producers Lenny Kravitz, Gamble & Hoff, and Wyclef Jean.
“The energy in the studio was exactly the same, we all were just so excited to be back together”, says Dash about the group’s reunion.
We asked Sarah Dash if she would ever be interested in making a biographical movie about the group. “Now that would be great, Labelle is one of those stories that should be told”, she stated.
When asked who would play the part of her fabulous group member, Patti Labelle, she replied, ”Hands down Fantasia! Patti has a remarkable voice and so does Fantasia”.
When questioned about who would play her, she announced, ”I could see Raven Symone playing me. She has enough heart and soul to pull off me”.
The ladies of Labelle are definitely pioneers, and helped to set the trend for a lot of girl-groups. Sarah Dash is not just a member of Labelle; she is a strong woman who has overcome many obstacles in her life, and refuses to be forgotten!
