When Ian Jarrell and I attended the fabulous Paper Magazine Party a couple of months ago, we had the honor of meeting David Foox–artist and owner of Foox-U art. Well, of course we were initially drawn to the art because of the unique name “Foox-U”–which made my friends and I chuckle– but we all found ourselves intrigued by the creativity of David Foox’s art.  Fortunately, Foox had some time to talk with ATF all the way from Denver, Colorado…

ATF: I hear an accent. Where are you from?

David Foox: What you’re hearing is a mixture between New Zealand, New York perhaps, and a little bit of South African. But I guess you are hearing a lot of New Zealand.

ATF: Well I met you at the Paper Magazine Party and my friends and I were quite intrigued by your art. Especially with the name Foox-u. Can you tell us how you came up with that name?

DF: ::Laughing:: Well thank you to Paper Magazine there’s another show they are having called Beautiful People coming up soon that I’ll be attending and showing my art. This art will be as equally striking as my art in the last show. To answer your question in regards to Foox-u, well my last name is obviously Foox and it’s quite unique. I did a tour on facebook and I was surprised to find there were thousands of Foox (I guess the plural would be Fooxii perhaps). So Foox-u is just kinda  like saying f*-u, nothing in a negative way. it’s kind of like f*-u I live my life the way I want. And as long as I’m engaging in productive, positive, good behavior and I’m reaching goals I set for myself then it’s pretty fair to be like f*-u.

ATF: Okay, and how long have you been working on your career as an artist?

DF: About 3 years now fulltime, but I guess I have always been drawing or doodling or scribbling or tagging my whole life. Some of the artist from the Kung Foox Collective have been around for a very long time and are becoming more active and commercial.

ATF: How would you describe your art work?

DF: Top surrealism would be the broad category, and within category i would call my genre  “New World Order Propaganda”. I mean why not? ::Laughs::
————————————

ATF: What makes your art so unique and stand out?

DF: I don’t have an exact answer to satisfy your question. Basically, I believe my art is special therefore it is so.  What makes it so special is that I believe in my art 100%. Complete support of the things that I create. I believe that every artist can be special or have special art or be unique. There is room enough for that in this infinite universe.

ATF: What are you working on right now what can we expect to see in the future?

DF: Creatures of God. Creatures of God is based upon our Art of Walk. Tons of artists got together and each person brought their own theme and animal which they believe they look like. I did a Badger, Jessica did an Eagle, Julie did a lion. All of these people selected animals and a theme. And from that we developed a painting—kind of a fiction—all of these human emotions when you are really trying to achieve something. The art shows human bodies with animal heads in different kinds of situations and expresses the soul—very emotional purity.

ATF: Personally who are some of your favorite artists? Who inspires you?

DF: Mark Ryden – by far the most inspiring – Shepard Fairey, Jaime Hewitt, Dave Kinsey, Blaine Fontana, Kent Williams, Camille Rose Garcia, Tim Biskup, Ryan Mcguinness, Angy wobot. You should never ask an artist who his favorite artists are. ::laughs::

ATF: Hi David thanks so much for taking out the time to speak with me tonight.

Foox: Indeed.

ATF: That’s right, that makes sense. So when did Foox-u start, how did it evolve?

DF: Well it developed from the Kung Foox Collective, but we abbreviated it KFC but not to get confused with Kentucky Fried Chicken.  We don’t fry our art here ::laughs::: Basically it started with a bunch of artists, some artist have recently joined us. Jessica Foox and I started it and joined with emerging artists. From there we started helping these artists and started examining what is the recipe for becoming a successful artist and believe it or not there is a formula: as long as you persevere intensely on your own art and follow some basic rules you can develop a career out of your art.

ATF: Okay, and how long have you been working on your career as an artist?

DF: About 3 years now fulltime, but I guess I've always been doodling and drawing or scribbling or tagging my whole life. Some of the artist from the Kung Foox Collective have been around for a very long time and are becoming more active and commercial.
