Monday night I went to see John Legend and Estelle perform at the Apollo Theatre. Talking to a few of the guys that attended the concert, they expressed to me that their initial thought was that the concert was going to be boring–watching a man behind a piano for 2 hours didn’t seem exciting to them–and most were taking their girls to see John Legend as an early Valentine’s day gift. After the concert, many of them said, “I’m buying his last two albums ASAP.” Now I’ve been up on John Legend since 2002, so I was overly excited about the concert and knew I would walk out satisfied.

Estelle was the first to perform at

8:00pm on the dot! I arrived at 8:05 and she was already finishing up her first song. To my surprise, the crowd wasn’t surprised with most of her songs but of course when “American Boy” came on the crowd lost their mind. I was pretty dissapointed that people weren’t as hype over her other tracks because her album is definitely in my top 5 of 2008, and if you aren’t up on Estelle you are definitely missing out!

Anyway, I was happy that Estelle performed nearly all of the tracks off of Shine.  And her back up singers were adorable and entertaining. Estelle has such a great personality, she’s outspoken and has so much fun on stage. She even brought some random fan on stage and was pretty much grinding him. lol Good Times.

John Legend didn’t do the typical and come out from backstage, he actually walked through the crowd and on his way up to the stage. I was so happy that nobody acted ignorant and started chasing him or passing out and stuff lol. I’m not a fan of his new album Evolver, so I was so happy when he performed most of my favorite tracks from his previous two albums, Get Lifted and Once Again. His back up singers were so talented and entertaining as well. My favorite performance of the night was She Don’t Have to Know, and  ”Green Light” where he had cutie Andre 3000 projected on a big screen. Everyone in there felt the music and couldn’t help but to stand up and dance like we were all in the music video.

John Legend also spoke about his anti-poverty project in Africa which was very moving (Show Me Campaign).

Overall it was the best night of 2009 I’ve had so far, and very memorable.
