Fefe Dobson: “I Try to Take Rihanna Biting My Style as a Compliment”

We mentioned a couple of weeks ago that Fefe Dobson performed at the Mercury Lounge here in NYC, and this got everyone talking again about how Rihanna seemed to have completely bitten her style. With her being a former Def Jam artist as well, its hard to not assume this.

Honey Magazine actually got a chance to sit down with the Canadian “rocker chick”, and she let it be known that she is fully aware of the “swagger jacking”.

fefe dobson again

When asked how she felt about Rihanna’s image going from dancehall reggae queen to cool, punky, rocker chick:

I mean, for sure I question that, but who wouldn’t. She is supposedly a fan of mine. I try to take it as a compliment. It gets a little much when she starts getting the same tattoos as me but overall I just want people to separate the image and listen to the music. It’s about the music. Its like Prince and Michael Jackson, totally different artists. Or its like Kanye West and Jay-Z. So what? They are both black men, they sound different. So they both wear jeans, they are different. And why would you want the same type of artist?

When asked what she thought when she met Rihanna:

Yeah, I met her when she was the dance hall queen with the long hair. She was a nice girl but very quiet.

    Ha!!!
Rihanna Swagger Jackin Fefe? Not likely. Lets look at the 16 yr old Take me Away Video
where she was just a lil girl with curly ponytails pretending to be angry but not quite pulling it off. All of a sudden with the release of a new single after almost a decade she suddenly has a much Edgier look. Who’s really Swagger Jackin here?

P.S. Rihanna has never been a dancehall queen. She’s never came across like that and she’s always had edgier tracks.

I agree with homegirl above me. Anybody who says Rihanna was not at one time the dancehall queen obviously doesn’t know music. When her broken English speaking ass first came on the scene all her music had that Caribbean feel and then when Def Jam saw nobody was really buying into it she wanted to become this…..wild women who chops her hair off, gets tats and gets socked every now and again.

Ok folks lets be real…when Rih rih first came out she was all about the dancehall I.e. Pon de replay. Anywho, they were both on the same label and I find it very interesting and convient that as soon as island def jam released fefe, that’s when rihanna released her good girl gone bad album and suddenly changed her image…by the way the hair, tatts, and sound all belonged to fefe. I mean matching tattoo’s that’s a little sad. Rihanna don’t have an original bone in her body…hence why she’s in the middle of a lawsuit for stealing music I.e “Umbrella” and “Take a Bow”. And look who her mentor/lover is…lying and just as dishonest, Jay-z! Every cold ass line he ever put down, blonged to Biggie. She’s a fake and a fony and for the record, I never believed her “taking control of my image” bullshit. You’ve been found out shawty!

umm….i don’t agree with you saying that ALL of Jay-z songs were stolen from Biggie…don’t say thats not what you meant because thats exactly what you said…Biggie took lines from other rappers b4 him as well. Lil Wayne uses Jay-Z lines so does, T.I, Kayne, Juelz Santana, and countless other rappers…its a form of respect in the rap world to quote lines from other rappers. By you saying that all his songs are from Biggie is accurate. Even Jay himself admitted that he refrenced some of Biggie’s lines in his songs…and thats exactly what its called, REFERENCING in the music world. But other than that, I do agree with what you said about Rihanna, but she didn’t steal songs…The Dream got his credit for Umbrella, and Ne-yo got his credit for Take a Bow…can you explain further what you meant by your comment? Other that that, her style is completely not her own…she was called a Beyonce wanna be when she first came out, now she is being called a FeFe Dobson swagger jacker now…these are appropriate accusations. But lets remember that Rihanna is a puppet. Every song she has out was not had no creative influence by her at all, Everytime she leaves the house, her stylist approves every outfit, down to the color of the finger nails… This is true with every artist except a handful. Mostly artist on a major label. She knows what she is doin tho, as well does her record label…she gained major popularity by morphing a style that never belonged to her in the first place…

“By you saying that all his songs are from Biggie is accurate” I meant to say that it is inaccurate…

When Rihanna first came out with Umberlla I said shes has Fefes image for the Sunday love album. Meshia go look up Sunday love photos and compare them. U can even go to youtube and See thats what happen. When Fefe got dropped from the label I think that they new her image was marketable and profitable and just gave it to another artist. Rihanna is a very talented artist and now shes making alot of money off of it. I do believe that she has turned it into her own.

Rihanna has, without question, copied Fefe Dobson, down to the TATTOOS. Fefe was with Def Jam LONG before Rihanna showed up. Fefe left the label due to creative differences, because Fefe refused to let them mold her into what they wanted her to be. It is true that Fefe’s second album “Sunday Love” was never released, and that was mainly due to bad promotion as well as the two singles’ failure to chart. She has signed with a new label that is willing to let her do her own thing, has a new single out called “I Want You,” and an album called “Joy” that is due to release in March 2010. Just for the record. I, too, noticed HUGE similarities in Rihanna and Fefe. My understanding though, is that the two of them are good friends, and Rihanna has even referenced Fefe Dobson as someone she admires and looks up to. It’s like the old saying goes: The best form of flattery is imitation.

Fefe has never once complained about Rihanna copying her, she only addressed it, because alot of her fans have been wanting to know how she feels about it. Fefe has said that she thinks it’s pretty cool that she’s biting her style, because she has heard that Rihanna is also a fan of hers. She just said it is a bit much when someone even gets the same tatoos as you. Keep in mind that while stars on the neck tattoos is a popular thing that a lot of people do, Rihanna had NO tattoos WHATSOEVER when she first emerged on the scene in ‘05. Meanwhile, Fefe was already doing this back in ‘03, and always did have a rock thing to her.

If you listen to their voices, Rihanna’s voice is basically the R&B version of what Fefe’s would sound like had she been doing the same type of music Rihanna was/is doing. Even a lot of Rihanna’s photo concepts are very similar to those of Fefe Dobson. It is what it is.

I would also like to say, though, that I do like Rihanna, and her copying Fefe does not in anyway take away from that fact. I like Fefe most, but I do like Rihanna, she is starting to grow on me a bit. But yeah, I needed to say something though.

    Cheers,

    T.Styles

actually, when fefe came out with “take me away” she was 15 with a curly pony tail….a few years later she released “don’t let it go to your head”, in the video, she had cut her hair off and looked more grown up. when rihanna came out she was all pon de replay….she had the whole carribean feel then suddenly she steals fefe’s style. fuck yeah she stole it and yeah bitch up top fefe had a fucking “swag” rihanna bit off her hardcore and everyone knows it. even fefe. rihanna fucking sucks anyway. as soon as she came out with the chopped off hair and shit alll of fefe’s fans were like what the fuck. so please know your fucking facts before you wanna defend bullshit ass rihanna.
