Video: 3rd Annual BET Honors Performances

Last night, BET aired its 3rd Annual BET Honors which honored Queen Latifah, Whitney Houston, and Diddy. The show was hosted by Gabrielle Union, who shamelessly changed her weave and dress every time she appeared on stage (work bish!). The BET Honors is normally a pretty dry show, but this year was a little different.

With performances from the likes of Patti Labelle, Mary J. Blige, Jennifer Hudson, and even Maxwell; this show was set up to be the water cooler topic of the day. The highlight of the night had to be Stevie Wonder & Trey Songz singing “Invented Sex“, that had us on the floor.

Jennifer Hudson absolutely stole the show singing “I Will Always Love You” in honor of Whitney Houston. She is looking amazing after just giving birth a couple months ago. She actually looks better than ever.

From Lady Gaga and Elton John’s surprising duet, Beyoncé’s army of male dancers, to a ground breaking 3-D tribute to Michael Jackson, the 52nd Annual Grammy Awards were definitely something to remember. The Grammys have been lacking for the past couple years, but last night kept us entertained from start to finish.

Our favorite performances hands down were from Beyonce, and Maxwell. They were both vocally amazing! They both picked up awards as well, which was much deserved. (Beyonce broke the record for the most Grammy awards won in a single night by a female artist, taking 6 out of 10.)

Women Make Mixtapes Too Folks: Krys Ivory, Dondria, & Lola Monroe

The mixtape world is a male dominated world, like the rest of the industry. There are a few new women trying to break that trend. Dondria, Krys Ivory, and Lola Monroe are all holding it down for the ladies.

Dondria is the YouTube singer that got signed to So So Def, we have her mixtape on repeat. Dondria went the typical mixtape route and remixed some bangers. She gets on some of the hottest tracks from Robin Thicke, Musiq Soulchild, Drake, etc. Dondria holds her own on every track, Jermaine Durpri should be proud. Her remake of Maxwell’s “Pretty Wings” is so dope.

Krys Ivory is the songstress signed to Ryan Leslie’s Next Selection imprint. We sat down with her a little while ago and got all in her business, she is truly one of our favorite fab female. The message behind the mixtape is survival and reflecting on life. Krys is a cancer survivor and she is so inspiring. The mixtape is hosted by radio host, Charlamagne Tha God.

Now we know you have heard of Lola Monroe aka Angela Lola Luv. Well, this former video vixen is serious about breaking into the rap game. She plans to not let Nicki Minaj take all the shine, they are reportedly still beefing. Lola teamed up with southern rapper Lil Boosie on her first mixtape called The Untouchables. We wish she would have chose someone better than Lil Boosie, he is so tired. Its really hard to take her seriously as a rapper.

Wendy Williams Covers Nov. Issue of Bleu Mag

We’ve been seeing a lot of Wendy Williams lately—and she’s not leaving anyone’s sight anytime soon. Here she is blessing the cover of Bleu Magazine’s November issue. The “Queen of Media” jokes:

My show hasn’t been on a full season yet and I am not as seasoned as Martha Stewart or as experienced as Dr. Phil, but I’m taller than all of them! Height has it’s advantages.

We love her sense of humor.

Also featured on the November issue is Maxwell, Elektrik Red, Necole Bitchie, RHOA’s Kandi Burress, and Male Super Model Shawn Sutton. Definitely need to pick up that issue next month!

Common + Maxwell on Stage= Magic + Concert Afterparty at Marquee

The time finally came—and went. Just that fast. Months ago we announced that Maxwell and Common teamed up to tour the nation, and their stop to NYC’s Madison Square Garden was last night! Unfortunately, ATF wasn’t in the building. But his album is a HIT, and we can only imagine how the performance was. Two of the sexiest, grown-mature looking men on stage? Common AND Maxwell? What in the world could beat that?

Chrisette Michele was the first artist to bless the stage with her beautiful voice, followed by the one and only Common who performed his hit singles, “Go”, “The People”, “The Light”, “Love of My Life”, he also covered ‘Yeezy’s,”Jesus Walks.”

After Common, Maxwell hit the stage in a 3 piece suit and had the ladies going wild. He covered most of the songs off his album, Blacksummersnight, and of course he touched on his old hits like “Sumthin’ Sumthin’.”

Judging by the pictures, looks like it was a great show. We also heard that by the end of the night, the stage was filled with panties from women in the audience. *Blank stare*

Maxwell is coming to Madison Square Garden on September 28th and you know the grown and sexy crowd cannot WAIT to see this sexy man on stage. The opening acts for the BLACKsummersnight tour are Common and Chrisette Michele.

Melanie Fiona comes to SOBs for her album preview show, freah off dropping her mixtape, which was hosted by ?uestlove of The Roots. Melanie, the R&B sensation from Canada, was born to to Guyanese immigrant parents and grew-up in the inner city of Toronto. The songtress grew up living in a music-filled household and Melanie says that from an early age she knew music was her passion. Her father was a guitarist in a band and would allow her to sit on the stage when she was younger as he practiced. Fiona also recalls her mother’s wide range of music taste; playing everything from The Ronettes to Whitney Houston in the house when she was younger.

We know that everyone remembers Aubrey O’Day from Danity Kane. Well it was rumored that she was going to leave music alone, but she shut that down quick. Aubrey O’Day has released a song featuring Shanell aka SNL from Young Money, who is also D.Woods sister. They made a remake of Eddie Murphy’s hit “Party All The Time“, but they added their own little twist..

Swizz Beatz & Alicia Keys teamed up to produce and write the lyrics to Whitney Houston’s uptempo track, “Million Dollar Bill“. Watch out for these two, we are guessing that Swizz Beatz and Keys are definitely the next power couple with many more hits to come.

“Million Dollar Bill” will be featured on Houston’s long-awaited comeback album, I Look To You, available next month.

This girl group is really pushing out music left and right. RichGirl is the group put together by producer Rich Harrison, that is currently opening for Beyonce. That tour is giving them a lot of buzz.

A track from their upcoming album entitled “Lucky You Are” just leaked. It’s a great ballad, that shows off their vocal talents. RichGirl will continually remind us of the classic Destiny’s Child.

We were extremely thrilled to hear that Baatin rejoined Slum Village a couple of months ago–with plans of recording a new album and touring. The hip-hop community definitely took a hit last week when it was learned that Baatin was found dead–the cause of death still unknown. Baatin had been sick for a while, in 2002 he admited that he was diagnosed with Schizophrenia.

As mentioned, we were anticipating Slum Village’s comeback and we’ve had this track, “Cloud 9″ produced by the late Dilla, on rotation in the Ipod.

Maxwell Visits 106 & Park

Maxwell was looking mighty fine as he made his appearance on 106 & Park yesterday to honor Michael Jackson and talk about the release of his album. Maxwell has been spending a lot of time in NYC promoting BlackSummersNight; his album release party was Monday night, and fortunately, we’ve only heard good things about it.

So where in the world has Maxwell been and what made him randomly pop up with a new album? Well according to him, he used the free time to clear his head and get a life. But it’s clear from his new CD, “BLACKsummers’night,” he also used the time to come out with something very unique.
