Officer Rescues Baby Deer, And She Shows Her Gratitude

An officer got a call about a baby dear stranded dangerously close to the deadly Carr fires. The one-month-old fawn's mother was nowhere to be found, and people feared the deer would perish in the blaze. The officer rushed to help evacuate the baby deer, who showed her appreciation by giving him a kiss on the cheek.

Sergeant Fawson of San Francisco rushed to the fawn's aide as the blaze approached the area. The Redding wildfire has killed six people and has forced tens of thousands of people to be evacuated from their homes.

The massive wildfire has so far claimed more than 1,000 homes in and around Redding. Just as the fire appeared to be getting under control and some evacuees were allowed to go home, the flames burst out once more and the fire is raging as fiercely as ever.

The little deer appeared lost and confused. Fawson showed up and managed to get the fawn into the patrol car. He and his partner drove her to safety. The police department reports that the 'deer was released to, and will be cared for, by a wildlife rescue'.

Before handing her over, of course, the officer needed to get a picture with the little victim. Someone snapped a photo of him sitting in the patrol car as the very alert deer watched out the window.

Another photo shows Fawson holding the fawn in his arms in front of the patrol car. As if she knew what was going on, the adorable little deer stuck out her tongue and gave her rescuer a lick on the cheek.

The fires are tragic and first responders have their work cut out for them, but it's nice to know that the little deer didn't perish in the flame.

“Whatever resources are needed, we’re putting them there,” Gov. Jerry Brown said at a news conference. “We’re being surprised. Every year is teaching the fire authorities new lessons. We’re in uncharted territory.”

“It just goes on and on,” said Scott McLean of CalFire to the Daily Hampshire Gazette. "We had this rain at the beginning of the year and all that did was promote the growing of grass and brush... It’s a Catch-22. It’s growing more product to catch on fire.”

McLean says it's very easy for a fire to break out in the drought-riddled area. “Don’t park the car on dry grass ... no campfires, no flame. It doesn’t take anything to start a fire right now.”

Photos show the entire area engulfed in an unearthly orange glow. Thus far the Carr Fire has burned more than 176 square miles, and it's been one of the most destructive fires in the history of the state. Rescuers are focused on trying to save lives and homes, but occasionally when they get the chance to save some animals they will jump in.

An elderly woman and her two great-grandchildren were confirmed dead when flames swept through the woman's property. Another man who had just been sent home after heart surgery passed away when he was unable to evacuate on his own.

Police had closed roads leading to his house and his sister couldn't get to him. Two others among the death count were firefighters.

The death toll may continue to rise. Thus far, more than a dozen people have been reported missing.
