Puppies Rescued After Someone Put Them In A Plastic Bag And Dumped Them In A Bush

Three newborn puppies were lucky to be alive when they were found by a dog-walker and saved by animal rescuers. Footage of the scene shows the shocking moment when the puppies were discovered in the bag. Thankfully, they ended up going home with someone who could properly care for them.

Susanna Bergamaschi, an animal rescue volunteer, was out walking when she was approached by a person walking a dog. The person said he heard some strange noises coming from a nearby hedge, and pointed Bergamaschi to it.

Bergamaschi and her friend headed over. "We walked over and saw a plastic bag entangled in a fence," she said. "The dog walker managed to untangle the bag and once we got it back to the road we opened it and saw the puppies inside!"

The puppies looked extremely newborn and were in distress. It didn't look like they had been in the bag long, they would probably have not survived more than a few hours.

Bergamaschi rushed home with the puppies. Thankfully her work in animal rescue let her know exactly what she had to do. She began feeding them with a bottle. She made a comfortable space for them and she gave them warmth and affection.

Now that the puppies are being nursed back to health, they are looking much better. The rescuer is providing them with the care they need for now, and plans to give them a good life.

Unfortunately, abandoning pets seems to be a problem in Italy. One writer says his friend contacted him to say she found six newborn kittens wrapped in a plastic bag, dumped in a garbage bin. Thankfully, all the kittens survived. They managed to find a surrogate feline mother to care for the kitties, and were eventually able to rehome them all.

The British writer, who lives in Italy with his wife and cats running holiday rental villas, says that the way Italian people treat dogs and cats is often shocking to him.

"While you can live with Italy’s mindless bureaucracy; the potholes; the Post Office queues; and the death-wish driving as an unavoidable downside (to the considerable upside) of living here, the scarcely credible stupidity, cruelty and ill-treatment inflicted on ‘pets’ is an altogether far more sinister malaise," he writes on TheLocal.it.

People living in rural areas seem to be much less sentimental about their animals. It’s not usual for unwanted animals to be ignored or abandoned, or for pets to be poisoned by concoctions left out to keep other wildlife off the farm and away from the chickens.

Unfortunately, the government-run public rescue shelters are sub-standard in Italy. Dogs are often abused and sometimes even starved. Some people running the shelters are no more than criminals-- they pocket the funds, then neglect to feed or give medical care to the animals. Many dogs that end up in shelters don't end up getting adopted.

Some 135,000 dogs and cats are abandoned in the country every year, with over 600,000 estimated stray dogs roaming the streets. It is a growing problem with no end in sight, so these puppies have no idea how lucky they were.
