The Artwork Prince Harry Gave Meghan Markle Will Melt Your Heart

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle's love story has touched the world. It's not often that two people of such different backgrounds and different lifestyles seem so perfect for each other. Even before the relationship went public, however, it looks like the couple knew they had something special. The Prince went shopping for artwork for a special someone, and the piece he broke is absolutely perfect.

According to People magazine, Prince Harry went into London's Walton Fine Arts Gallery in 2016, not long before news broke that he was dating the American actress. He went into the VIP section and told the salespeople that he was looking for something to give 'an important person', according to a local art collector.

“Harry is one of the regulars in the area and regularly goes into the shops and galleries with his bodyguard, kind of in stealth mode,” the anonymous collector told People. “He was in the gallery for a little while and liked a few things, then settled on the Van Donna. He said he was looking for something for ‘an important person.’ It was literally just before anyone heard about Meghan — literally just days before it was announced he was going out with her.”

Harry ended up settling on a work of art with two panels, known as a 'diptych print'. The left side panel reads 'Everybody Needs Somebody to Love' in fancy pink lettering. On the right side there is a blue-and-white stenciled image of a boy and girl walking hand-in-hand from behind.

Harry asked if he could split the diptych print into two separate pieces so that he could give one to the ‘important person’ and keep one piece for himself.

“At the time nobody knew about Meghan Markle, but if it was for her then it’s a very romantic gesture. It’s a bit like a charm bracelet — where you give half of it to someone you’re involved with and keep the other half yourself. We should all learn something from it, I think,” the collector said.

The artwork is by a trendy up-and-coming British artist, Van Donna. The artist uses a pseudonym based on the names of her two heroes: Dutch artist Vincent Van Gogh and American pop icon Madonna. Van Donna's work often involves love as a theme.

Harry paid several thousand dollars for the original work of art, and, as they say, a picture is worth a thousand words. Clearly the young prince already knew by then that he had met 'the one'.

Van Donna confirmed that the prince purchased her work when she tweeted, "OMG! So excited that Harry has acquired my paintings for his collection! Yay!!!"

You have to wonder; now that the Duke and Duchess of Sussex have officially tied the knot, does this mean that the two separate pieces of the artwork have been reunited, and are hanging at Nottingham Cottage, their cozy little love nest on the grounds of Kensington Palace.

“At the time nobody knew about Meghan Markle, but if it was for her then it’s a very romantic gesture. It’s a bit like a charm bracelet — where you give half of it to someone you’re involved with and keep the other half yourself. We should all learn something from it, I think.”
