'Baby Daddy' Father's Day Cards Are Not Going Over Well with Shoppers

Large retail stores like Target usually have big sales for Father's Day, but this year some shoppers are getting offended. People have spotted 'Baby Daddy' cards on the shelves, and they have told the store that it's not exactly a term of endearment. Target is working with the greeting card manufacturer to have the cards removed.

The term 'baby daddy' refers to men who father a child with a woman to whom they're not married or involved with. It's a slang term, and if you look it up in the Urban Dictionary online, you'll find that it's not exactly flattering.

"Your boyfriend/husband, who you have a child with, but who ran out, or doesn't come by, or never pays for what the baby needs, so you don't want to call him a husband/boyfriend/father," reads one definition.

"Usually a broke ass black man; Who you met through a friend and had sex wit when you was upset and confused. Now you don had his baby and he dont pay child support and denies yo son ray ray," reads another.

The phrase originated in the black community, but its use has been more widespread. Still, American Greetings, the card manufacturer, seemed to think that 'baby daddy' cards might appeal to minorities more. They graced the cards with people of color.

The cards from American Greeting are sold by a number of retailers, including Target. One woman on Instagram brought attention to the cards by posting a photo.

With so few cards ever featuring black couples on them, the African-American woman was drawn to one at Target. She was shopping for a card for her husband, but was horrified when she noticed the card was for a 'baby daddy'.

"This is an insult to black fathers and a slap in the face to the African-American community as a whole. There are plenty of black men that are EXCELLENT FATHERS, not “baby daddies"!!!" wrote one person on Twitter in response to the card.

"So this is what @Target thinks about black families, that we have baby daddy’s and not father, SMH, this is why we have to start pulling our resources because we have to separate, come in to UNITY , and help ourselves and own our own stores," said another.

Target was quick to address the issue when it was brought to their attention. "Thanks for sharing this with us. We assure you it is never our intention to offend our guests with the merchandise we provide. We sincerely apologize to anyone this particular card has offended. Please verify the store location this was displayed so we can share your feedback," the store said in a response.

A Target spokesperson followed up with a statement. "We want all guests to feel welcomed and respected when they shop at Target," it read. "We were made aware of some concerns about this card last week and are working with our vendor to have it removed from Target stores. We appreciate the feedback and apologize. It’s never our intent to offend any of our guests with the products we sell.”

Target ha boasted that it is one of the ‘most ethical companies’ in the world.
