Fashion Psychologist Analyzes Melania Wardrobe, Deciphers Her Hidden Message

There is more to fashion than just grabbing something to wear before we head out for the day. Even if you're the kind of person who prefers to keep things simple, donning a t-shirt and jeans with a pair of sneakers on a normal basis, your clothes subconsciously say something about you, and other people are receiving that message subconsciously as well. We've all used clothing to say something about ourselves.

Who hasn't worn the power suit to the job interview, or hasn't agonized over what to wear on a first date. Fashion-savvy individuals can choose clothing as a form of communication, sending messages more specifically and deliberately.

Few are more fashion-savvy than our current First Lady, Melania Trump. The former model always looks great, whether she's hosting foreign dignitaries, visiting victims of tragedies or making public appearances.

For the most part, Melania is a quiet first lady who doesn't say much in public; on the other hand, she's using her wardrobe to speak for her. One fashion psychologist admits to the Daily Mail that Melania may be 'the most introverted First Lady we’ve ever had', but what the FLOTUS may be secretly saying with her clothes and accessories speaks volumes.

"She may appear to be difficult to read because she isn’t as flamboyant or as vocal as most First Ladies that we’ve seen in the past," Dawnn Karen, founder of the Fashion Psychology Institute, explains. "But as a fashion psychologist, when I analyze her I see her as speaking without saying words. She speaks very loudly through her clothing."

One way Melania communicates is through her stiletto heels. Karen explains this is a way to bolster one's confidence. "When you’re wearing high heels your confidence goes up. Some women feel like they are towering over others and it helps them to feel powerful."

Melania also wears a lot of white, which the fashion psychologist says may be an attempt to portray herself as squeaky-clean.

"Some say that [Melania] has a lewd, salacious background... That she participated in other activities that were not so “First Lady-like”. Wearing white is kind of an ode to purity that she is trying to portray," Karen explains.

The reason Melania wears sunglasses a lot, even sometimes when it's dark outside, helps keep her from having to make eye contact with a lot of people. It shows that she's really not that comfortable with her position.

On the other hand, Melania may be choosing her coats these days for a more practical reason: to put a barrier between her and her husband. She and President Donald Trump have had a lot of ups and downs since he took office. At times he’s ignored Melania and walked several paces ahead of her. At other times, he’s reached for her, only to have her pull back or swat his hand away.

The couple have gotten a lot of backlash about their interactions in the media, so lately Melania has taken to wearing long coats draped over her shoulders like a cape.

"Covering her hands and arms lets her appear less inviting and less warm,’ she says. ‘[Melania] is saying: ‘I’m creating a barrier, a protective shield," says Karen.

With sex scandals hitting the Trump administration hard, it's not surprising that the FLOTUS is trying to keep up appearances, but still keeping a wall between her and her husband. And she knows just the clothes to do it, too.
