Kate Spade Leaves Heartbreaking Message for Daughter in Suicide Note

The death of 55-year-old Kate Spade came as a big shock to the world yesterday. Spade reportedly committed suicide by hanging in her apartment in Manhattan on June 5. Her body was found by a housekeeper. According to police reports, the designer left a heartfelt suicide note that addressed her daughter.

Spade told her 13-year-old daughter, Francis Beatrice Spade, not to blame herself for her mother's suicide.

"Bea - I have always loved you. This is not your fault. Ask Daddy!" she wrote.

According to a preliminary investigation, Spade appears to have committed because of 'family problems... in her relationship', police told The Post.

Spade was born in Kansas City Missouri and began working in the accessories department of Mademoiselle Magazine in New York City. She worked her way up to senior fashion editor/head of accessories, then left to become a handbag designer.

She married Andy Spade, the brother of actor David Spade, and they launched a handbag company, which grew to include clothes, shoes, accessories, fragrances, home and garden items, and gifts.

The couple built a huge empire, but Spade sold it in 2007 so she could spend more time with her daughter. In 2016, she started a new fashion brand named for her daughter.

On Tuesday Morning, Spade was found by a housekeeper in her bedroom. She was hanging by a red scarf, which she had tied to the doorknob. The maid called 911, and Spade was pronounced dead at the scene.

Reports say Andy had been apartment shopping before his wife's death, and some speculate the designer was distressed over an impending break-up.

Reta Brosnahan Saffo, Spade's sister, said she wasn't entirely shocked by the suicide. “I will say this was not unexpected by me," she told the Kansas City Star. " I'd flown out to Napa and NYC several times in the past 3-4 years to help her to get the treatment she needed (inpatient hospitalization). She was always a very excitable little girl and I felt all the stress/pressure of her brand (KS) may have flipped the switch where she eventually became full-on manic depressive."

Saffo, two years older than Spade, claims that the family had long tried to help the designer with her depression. Spade, who had a 'happy go lucky' image, was afraid that a hospitalization would make her look bad. "Sometimes you simply cannot SAVE people from themselves!" she claims.

Spade's family has blasted Saffo for her comments. “The family is disgusted and saddened that at this time of great sorrow, Kate’s sister who has been estranged from the entire family for more than 10 years would choose to surface with unsubstantiated comments,” People says a source close to the family told them. “Her statements paint a picture of someone who didn’t know her at all.”

The fashion world and fans of Spade’s work have been offering condolences on social media.

"Although Kate has not been affiliated with the brand for more than a decade, she and her husband and creative partner, Andy, were the founders of our beloved brand. Kate will be dearly missed. Our thoughts are with Andy and the entire Spade family at this time,” said Tapestry, the company who bought Spade’s design company, in a statement.
