Mariah Carey Opens Up About Health Struggle

Bipolar disorder is a serious group of brain disorders that affect a person's mood and level of energy. Those suffering from the disorder can have difficult times due to the intense mood swings. Mariah Carey admits that she has been struggling with it for years.

The diva extraordinaire opened up to People Magazine to share her battle with bipolar disorder. She first learned about it in 2001 after she had a mental breakdown and was hospitalized. When doctors diagnosed it, she says she 'didn't want to believe it'.

For a while, Carey couldn't face the diagnosis. Because of that, she was not getting the kind of help and support that she needed.

She believed she was suffering from a sleep disorder. “For a long time, I thought I had a severe sleep disorder,” she reveals. "But it wasn’t normal insomnia and I wasn’t lying awake counting sheep. I was working and working and working … I was irritable and in constant fear of letting people down.

Those periods of sleeplessness were part of the mania that people with bipolar disorders experience. It can cause a big burst of agitated energy, followed by a sudden crash.

"Eventually I would just hit a wall," she says.

“Until recently I lived in denial and isolation and in constant fear someone would expose me,” she says. “It was too heavy a burden to carry and I simply couldn’t do that anymore. I sought and received treatment, I put positive people around me and I got back to doing what I love — writing songs and making music.”

It was a hard road, but she's finally on the right track now. Carey is taking medication to help control bipolar II. The meds help combat the swings between depression and hypomania.

“I’m actually taking medication that seems to be pretty good. It’s not making me feel too tired or sluggish or anything like that. Finding the proper balance is what is most important,” Carey explains.

She's also going to therapy, which is helpful in combatting the depression.

Carey is a busy lady. Not only does she have a hugely successful career as a top entertainer, but she's a single mom to 6-year-old twins. She and her ex-husband share custody of Monroe and Moroccan.

Now that she's back on track with her mental health, she says she felt compelled to come forward and speak out about her struggles.

“I’m just in a really good place right now, where I’m comfortable discussing my struggles with bipolar II disorder. I’m hopeful we can get to a place where the stigma is lifted from people going through anything alone. It can be incredibly isolating. It does not have to define you and I refuse to allow it to define me or control me," she says confidently.

For people who do suffer from bipolar, celebrities like Carey who are brave enough to come forward and speak candidly about their struggles can really be helpful. Not only does it make those people still struggling feel less alone, but it’s also a great way to raise awareness and launch public education campaigns to inform others about the condition and make help more accessible.
