Meghan Markle Slammed for Inappropriate Outfit at Queen's Birthday Party

Meghan Markle, the new Duchess of Sussex, is settling into life with the royal family. She and Prince Harry have recently returned from their brief honeymoon, and they attended a birthday event in honor of Queen Elizabeth II this week. Surprisingly, Markle, who always looks stunning and is praised for her fashion sense, was accused of dressing inappropriately for the event.

The event was the 'Trooping the Color' ceremony, a ceremony performed by the British army. The tradition has been around since the mid-18th century. It's performed to mark the birthday of the monarch and has become a big deal in the UK.

The BBC broadcast the event live, and it was streamed around the world in 2018. Meghan Markle, who just married Prince Harry in May, joined the royal family on the balcony to attend this event for the first time. Some critics feel that Markle made a poor choice when she chose her outfit for the event, and they’re complaining that she has violated royal protocol.

“Off the shoulder is inappropriate day wear at the Trooping or any official engagement,” said a critic, Page Six reports. "I do feel her choice of an off the shoulder dress was pushing it for HRH Queen Elizabeth’s Birthday celebration. I have a feeling she’s going to push the limits a little too much?!”

Another critic agreed, calling the garment ‘wholly inappropriate’

Many people have been eying Markle, wondering if the American feminist and former actress is going to fall into step with the royals. Some do not believe she'll be able to do it, and point to the numerous traditions that Harry and Meghan have already broken.

While some stiff critics may believe that Markle's off the shoulder pastel pink dress broke protocol, the fans are not having it. The dress may have been sleeveless and off the shoulder, but it was still very tasteful and fairly conservative by today's standards.

Many people love Markle because they feel she's been dragging the royal family into the 21st century in the best way possible. Markle fans were quick to criticize the critics.

“Oh the humanity!! The crown is experiencing such unrest with two barely visible shoulders. Stop it!!” one said.

“The American Princess is the epitome of class, beauty and style. We love Meghan Markle,” said another.

“Meghan Markle broke protocol by wearing an off the shoulder dress. Keep doing you boo!” another cried.

Another person who doesn’t seem to mind Markle flashing her upper arms or shoulders is the Queen herself. The Queen has embraced her new granddaughter-in-law with open arms from the start. She gave written consent to the wedding, despite Markle having been married previously and despite the fact that she was American. She’s had nothing but kind words for Meghan, and even let Meghan’s dog ride in her car with her.

More recently, since the wedding, the Queen chose Meghan to go on a solo trip with her on the official royal train—something even her grandsons, Princes Harry and William, have not ridden on yet.

While Markle may seem to be pushing the envelope by bearing a little bit of shoulder on a hot summer day, overall she’s made a big splash with the Queen, and ultimately, that’s what counts.
