Monica Lewinsky Issues Apology to 'Plane Bae' for Sharing Social Media Posts That Invaded Woman's Privacy

If anyone knows how hard it can be to have your privacy invaded, it's Monica Lewinsky. The former aide to President Bill Clinton had the most intimate details of her life splashed across the headlines for years. After recently participating in a social media thread that invaded the privacy of another woman, she says she is sorry.

Lewinsky was on social media when the #PlaneBae scandal broke. If you have been in a coma or under a rock for the last few days, you might have missed the drama that involved one couple giving a play-by-play of another couple's flirting.

Twitter user Rosey Blair and her boyfriend, Houston Hardaway, were taking a flight from New York City to Dallas, Texas last week, but the two couldn't get seats together on the plane. Blair asked another woman if she would mind switching, and the woman obliged her.

Blair and Hardaway were seated behind the woman who did them the favor, and joked about how funny it would be if she ended up meeting her true love on the plane. Sure enough, a handsome, athletic-looking man took the seat next to the woman. Blair and Hardaway then spied on the couple and documented the budding friendship on social media.

The thread went mega-viral, and the woman was dubbed #PlaneBae and #PrettyPlaneGirl. Blair live-tweeted everything she observed, noting when the two passengers laughed, touched each other, or went to the bathroom. She posted photos she snuck from between the seats and while following #PlaneBae and her new friend off the plane and through the airport.

"We don't have the gal's permish yet," Blair and Hardaway admitted in a video, so they said they wouldn't reveal her name.
"But I'm sure you guys are sneaky," she added.

The woman was promptly doxed and has since shut down all of her social media accounts to escape the unwanted attention.

“I owe an apology to #PrettyPlaneGirl + to people who follow me here for my anti-bullying + anti-public shaming stance,” tweeted Lewinsky after she heard about the sad fallout of the spying. Lewinsky had retweeted the thread, which she followed as it unfolded.

Lewinsky happened to be on a plane at the time when she said 'the thread about the "budding romance" popped into my feed'.

"[M]aybe because my parents met on a plane. maybe because i love a good rom-com. maybe because i was tired. maybe because i myself got caught up in likes and retweets in that moment, i retweeted it and also joked about the next leg of my flight," she wrote in a series of tweets. "[T]hough i winced from a few of the posts in the thread, i thought because their faces were blocked out it wasn’t too harmful. i know better than anyone that sometimes we can’t foresee the long-term consequences of our choices."

"[I] don’t think there was malice or an intent to humiliate on the part of the original poster. and there certainly wasn’t in my part when i re-tweeted the thread," Lewinsky continued. "[B]ut it was a mistake for me to amplify something which was an invasion of privacy, and i should have – given my history—seen it as an incident which could go pear-shaped... bringing stress, upset and a violation of privacy to whoever the woman on the plane is. this was definitely a good reminder to check myself!"
