Princess Diana Refused to Wear Chanel, But Her Reason Will Tug At Your Heartstrings

It's been more than 20 years since Princess Diana's death, but it seems like she's never far from people's thoughts. With her youngest son, Prince Harry, getting married to Meghan Markle last month, and her eldest son, Prince William, welcoming his third child just a few weeks before that, it's like Diana has been part of it all. Stories about her continue to appear, and her name continues to be invoked.

One Australian designer shared a very tender memory of the people's princess with Harper's Bazaar recently. He had an encounter with Diana shortly after she and Prince Charles split up. Obviously, the split had taken its toll on her.

Jayson Brundson says he was helping dress Diana for a hospital event in Australia. Even at the darkest period of her life, Diana tirelessly worked towards various causes and charities, visiting suffering people and spreading sunshine with her smile.

Brundson was going through some shoes trying to help Diana find a pair to go with her cream Versace suit. He pulled out a pair of Chanel, thinking they would match the outfit perfection. But Diana politely declined to wear them.

“She said, ‘No, I can’t wear linked C’s, the double C,’” Brundson told Harper's Bazaar, referring to the Chanel brand logo of a forward and backward pair of ‘C’s, liked at the curvature. They are the initials of the brand’s celebrated founder, Coco Chanel.

But for Diana, they represented a painful memory.

“It’s Camilla and Charles, “ Brundson says Diana told him.

Camilla, Charles' current wife, carried on an affair with the prince for years while he was married to Diana. Before Charles even met Diana, he dated Camilla for a while, but the two went their separate ways and ended up marrying other people. Shortly after Prince Harry, his second child with Diana, was born, the prince began seeing Camilla again.

Diana always said she loved her husband and desperately wanted the marriage to work, but she watched in horror as the relationship crumbled. She revealed in interviews before her death that she did everything to win her husband back and make the marriage work. She even confronted Camilla at one point, but to no avail. She was humiliated when a tabloid ran a transcript of intimate secret phone calls between Charles and his mistress. Diana and Charles divorced shortly after.

Charles, on the other hand, has always said that his marriage to Diana was a mistake. In a biography after their separation, he wrote that he never loved Diana, and that his father pushed him into marrying her.

He claims he was never happy with her, and by the time he was with her for just a few years he felt miserable. In the rare look into a royal’s true feelings, Charles explained he was in ‘total agony about the situation and I don't see how much longer one can go on trying to sweep it under the carpet and pretend nothing is wrong’.

Camilla and Charles married in 2005, years after Charles' divorce and Diana's death, in a low-key ceremony (as low-key as it gets for royals, anyway). And Diana seemed to be finding a way forward and finding happiness in life, until that tragic car accident ended it in 1996 when she was just 36 years old.
