Ronald Regan's Daughter Tells Us What Her Father Would Have Thought of President Donald Trump

Since the 2016 election, Donald Trump has been so bold as to make comparisons between himself and the late President Ronald Regan. Trump has noted the similarities: Reagan was also formerly a Democrat who became more conservative. Reagan was in the entertainment industry before turning to a career in politics. They both promote smaller government and lower taxes, especially for the wealthy.

According to Ronald Reagan's daughter, though, President Trump is dreaming if he thinks her father would approve of him.

Patti Davis, daughter of Ronald Reagan and his second wife, former First Lady Nancy Reagan, says she believes her father would be 'appalled' by Trump.

Davis, an actress and author, has long sided with liberal politics. She and her father frequently clashed over various topics. She disagreed with her father's position on nuclear weapons, abortion and same-sex marriage. For a while, the disagreements were a bit of a strain on the family, and they had a falling out. Later, though, they reconciled and learned to live with each other's political differences.

The former First Daughter believes that she and her father would be on the same page when it comes to Trump.

Davis wrote a Washington Post editorial in anticipation of the anniversary of her father's death. According to Davis, Reagan would hate Trump's 'caustic, destructive language'. Reagan was known for his gift of eloquence in speech, much more akin to former President Barack Obama than the current president. She says her father would have never dreamed of attacking the free press in the way Trump has.

She also believes that her father, a strong Constitutionalist, would hate the fact that Trump 'seems ignorant of the Constitution'.

Even though Reagan advocated a tough stance on immigration, she believes her father would have despised Trump's excessive anti-immigration position.

"He would ask us to think about the Statue of Liberty and the light she holds for immigrants coming to America for a better life," Davis writes. "Immigrants like his ancestors, who persevered despite prejudice and signs that read 'No Irish or dogs allowed'."

"There is a difference between immigration laws and cruelty. He believed in laws; he hated cruelty," she noted.

Davis also spoke very highly of her father in the piece, claiming that she misses his patriotism and genuine love for his country. If he were alive today, she believes her father would be reminding people that America was not established to be run under a tyrannical government. She claims Trump 'attempts at every turn to dismantle and mock our system of checks and balances'.

Davis isn’t the only one who believes that Trump is less like Reagan than he pretends to be. Michael Reagan, the president's eldest son, says, "[Trump has] been stealing my dad for his own purposes."

"One of my dad’s most important lessons to me was how to uncover a phony. He told me not to judge people by what they say; judge them by what they actually do. As President, dad used this “trust but verify” principle on the Soviets and it worked. Voters today should apply Reagan’s verify principle on Trump," Michael Reagan wrote in a piece for Union Leader.
