Why The Queen and Prince Philip Skipped Their New Great-Grandson's Christening Today

Today is a special day for the royal family: the Christening of the newest member of the family, Prince Louis. The third child of the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge was born on April 23, and most of the royal family is attending the big event. His parents, Prince William and Kate Middleton, will be there, of course, as well as his elder siblings Prince George and Princess Charlotte.

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, his uncle and aunt, attended the ceremony, as did Middleton's brother James, sister Pippa and Pippa's husband James Matthews. Grandparents Prince Charles and Camilla Parker-Bowles were also in attendance. With the parade of royals, one couple were notably absent: Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip.

People worried about the health of the 92 year old Queen or her 97-year-old husband needed be concerned. It was planned well ahead of time that the Queen and Prince Philip would not be attending the event, and that the arrangement had already been discussed with William and Kate, according to the Daily Mail’s royal correspondent.

"The Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh will not be attending today's christening. There's no health issue for the Queen. She was working flat out in Scotland last week and has got a busy few days in London with the RAF Centenary event tomorrow and #Trump on Friday," tweeted Rebecca English.

The Queen has apparently had a busy week. She's attending the the Royal Air Force's 100th Anniversary Fly-Over in addition to meeting with American President Donald Trump.

"The Queen & Philip have just spent the weekend together in Norfolk. He is remaining there while she travels back to London today. Her decision not to attend was mutually agreed with William & Kate, while Philip clearly doesn't want to attend public events unless he really has to," English added in a follow-up tweet.

July 9 is not only the date of the Christening, but it is also a special day for the Queen and Philip. It was on July 9 in 1947 that the two formally announced their engagement. They had been secretly engaged for a year, but they finally shared it with the world and released an official engagement portrait. Then a 19-year-old princess, Elizabeth is looking up lovingly at Philip, and Philip is gazing down adoringly at her.

The couple have been married for an amazing 70 years. It could be that the two want to squeeze in a little private time together as well.

The event took place today at St. James's Palace, the same place where Meghan Markle was Christened when she joined the Church of England so that she could marry Prince Harry. The Cambridges seemed to have coordinated their outfits, with Kate wearing a white Alexander McQueen dress and a Jane Taylor headpiece.

Prince Louis looked angelic in his Angela Kelley Christening robe, sleeping in his mother's arms. William looked handsome in a blue suit. Prince George wore a white polo shirt with blue trim and blue shorts, and Princess Charlotte was sporting a white dress with blue flowers and blue shoes.

On the Royal Family's official website, the Queen and Prince Philip were not listed as attendees.
