Hate to Tell You This, But You've Been Peeling Bananas the Wrong Way for Years

Peeling a banana may seem like a no-brainer, but if anyone who has enjoyed the soft, sweet fruit every now and then will tell you that things are never as easy as they seem. Have you ever grabbed the stem of a banana and yanked, only to find it refusing to break, bending around and destroying the top of the fruit? That's because you're not peeling it the right way.

We humans think we're so smart, but it looks like some of our friends in the animal kingdom know better than we do. Specifically, chimps and other primates can reportedly show us the correct way to open and peel a banana with ease. If they saw us do it, they'd probably be hysterical laughing at how silly we are.

If you ever spent time watching monkeys in a zoo, you'd notice that they have no trouble opening bananas, ever. You'd also see that they do it from the opposite end that humans use.

They're actually doing it the right way; if you have ever seen a banana tree, you'd see that the long stem part we grab at and try to pull down is the bottom of the banana, not the top of it. That stem is actually the hardest part of the banana because it's where it connects to the tree.

By fussing with that stem, we're actually making the task harder for ourselves. Not very bright, humans.

The opposite end of the banana is actually the top of the fruit, and that's your (pardon the pun) 'sweet spot'. Just pinch that end until the tip splits, then peel it back with ease. You will never struggle with the stem or suffer from a smooshed banana top again.

The next time you buy a bunch of bananas at the store, give it a try.
