Actress Receives Massive Backlash After Hurricane Comments

When you take a look at all of the devastation that has been caused recently by major natural disasters, minor inconveniences don’t seem like that big of a deal in the grand scheme of things. At least for most people, that is. We’ll assume that actress Melissa Joan Hart didn’t have her thinking cap on when she shared something on social media that was nothing short of insensitive. As Us shares, Hart lamented the fact that her vacation had been ruined by a hurricane.

To state the obvious, there are much greater problems afoot due to the recent hurricanes. Hurricanes Harvey and Irma did a number on Texas and Florida respectively, and Hurricane Maria has devastated islands in the Caribbean. Maria was the one that led to Hart’s plans being ruined, and she took to social media to share her thoughts.

"And just like that, our family vacation is canceled," she wrote. "Such a bummer but we plan to hit the @nickresortpuntacana resort another time this year."

We would assume she would like to have that one back. How can someone possibly share that on social media when it remains unclear exactly how much devastation has been wrought by a storm? There are islands that have been completely devastated, and we could be looking at a major humanitarian crisis as a result. That’s where the focus needs to be if you feel the need to share on social media, as no one could care less if your vacation plans have been impacted.

Many commenters were quick to pile on and point out the error of her ways.

"I think you should be more concerned with the people that live there instead of your meaningless vacation," shared one user.

“First, Punta Cana is the Dominican Republic, not Dominica. And it's better to be 'bummed' about death, destruction there,” added another commenter.

“Oh, we understood that your main thoughts are about your cancelled vacation. What a bummer indeed,” chimed in another user.

In fairness to Hart, it certainly stinks when vacation plans go south - but that’s the only part we can give her the benefit of the doubt on. There simply has to be a filter between the thoughts that pop into your head, and those that you share with the world. Scores of folks make that mistake on social media each and every day, and we’ll hope that Hart is one of the ones that learns that painful lesson after being mortified.

“Sorry about the tragedy you face. Missing an extravagant family vaca, absolutely devastating Prayers from #Houston/#Florida,” wrote one user.

“Prayers up for Melissa Joan Hart who had to cancel her vacation because of Maria,” added another commenter.

“How about donating the cost of your vacation to the poor people who are suffering because of the recent hurricanes,” shared another commenter.

Thoughts and prayers go out to all of the victims of these massive hurricanes, and we can only hope that relief efforts continue to go off without a hitch for the areas in need.
