Ex-Vanity Fair Editor Says Tom Hanks, Not Clooney, Might Run For President

According to the very well-connected Tina Brown, George Clooney will not be running for president because his gorgeous and highly intelligent wife Amal would not let him. Brown suggests that acting legend Tom Hanks is more likely to throw his hat in the presidential ring than his colleague Clooney.

Brown was asked this question given the recent speculation the unabashed progressive Clooney will make a run for the White House some day. Clooney is married to human rights lawyer Amal Alamuddin, and the couple are currently quite busy raising their 6-month-old twins Ella and Alexander.

In an interview with UK entertainment-industry publication Grazia, Brown said: “I’m not sure he would want to put himself up there for this absolute, this very harsh, horrible process. I’m not sure he would want to do that to his own wife, or that Amal would want to do it to their life, frankly.”

She continued, however, to say: “I’m sure there are other actors who think about it too. I’m sure Tom Hanks thinks about it.”

Julianne Moore, a close friend of Clooney’s, has also shot down the idea of Clooney running for the White House: “I can’t bear it, this idea of relating leaders with entertainment figures. What you want is a president experienced in government. I don’t even want to joke about movie stars being president of the US.”

Moore went on to comment about Clooney’s current state of mind: “You can see the difference in his personality, how settled he seems… he adores Amal.”

Of interest, Hanks cracked a joke about running for president together with famous conservative Dwayne 'The Rock' Johnson in the opening monologue of the Saturday Night Live episode he hosted this spring.

A bit later in her interview for the launch of her new tell-all book about her long tenure at the iconic magazine (The Vanity Fair Diaries), Brown digresses in order to slam Harvey Weinstein and other perpetrators of sexual abuse who are finally getting their comeuppance.

"What about Woody Allen?" Brown pauses dramatically and is clearly posing the question only semi-rhetorically. "In the case of Woody Allen, I say boycott his films. I’ve never been able to like them since what happened [when his affair with Soon-Yi Previn, the adopted daughter of his then partner, Mia Farrow, came to light and later accusations that he abused adopted daughter Dylan. Because he’s a pedophile and he never paid the price for it.”

Brown also related a story about an invitation by her publicist to dinner with Woody Allen and Jeffrey Epstein a couple of decades ago. As Brown recalls, she told the publicist, “What is this, the predators’ ball? Thank you very much, but I’ll pass on this invitation.” And she got very upset with me and she called up and said, “Why are you being so terrible about my friend Jeffrey Epstein?” And I said, “Because I’m the person who, at The Daily Beast, started that whole ball rolling [revealing stories of alleged abuse, sex parties and rape].” Epstein – he was trafficking underage girls. And in the end, he had a sort of minor house arrest [convicted of one count of soliciting a minor] and never really paid the price because he had so many rich friends. So many influential people were at the parties he threw, including Donald Trump.”

During the presidential campaign last year, both Epstein and Trump denied claims that they had raped a 13-year-old girl at a party around this time. Trump’s team insisted he barely knew Epstein at this point, although numerous news stories from the 1990s document the two men had more than a passing relationship. Note the woman who was allegedly raped eventually withdrew the claim.
