Feminist Group Plays Trump's 'Access Hollywood' Tape On Big Screen Near WH

Prior to last year’s presidential election, the infamous ‘Access Hollywood’ tape nearly derailed President Donald Trump’s candidacy completely. On the tape, Trump was caught engaging in some lewd banter with NBC’s Billy Bush. It was one of the more salacious revelations to emerge prior to an election in recent times, and it really looked it would be the death knell for Trump’s candidacy. The furor would actually die down, and the rest is history as we know it.

As The Daily Dot shares, while the scandalous tape is nothing but a footnote at this point in time, a feminist group known as UltraViolet is ensuring that the teachable moment doesn’t go to waste. The group recently held a “Rally to Grab Back” in the nation’s capital, and they found a way to work Trump’s remarks from the tape into the festivities. The tape was played on a loop for 12 consecutive hours on a massive screen by the Washington Monument.

The group dropped a release to explain its reasoning, noting that the purpose was “reminding Americans that their President is a self-confessed serial sexual abuser.”

“The video also reminds viewers that someone is sexually assaulted in the United States every 98 seconds while calling on Americans to join the fight against rape culture and resist the Trump Administration,” the release added.

On the tape, Trump explained to Bush that sometimes he would become so enthralled with beautiful women that he would “grab them by the p***y.”

“You know I’m automatically attracted to beautiful—I just start kissing them,” he added. “It’s like a magnet. Just kiss. I don’t even wait. And when you’re a star they let you do it. You can do anything.”

Emma Boorboor, a campaign director for UltraViolet, provided some more reasoning as to why the group chose to feature Trump’s remarks as part of the rally.

“We wanted to play the tape on loop to remind the people who the president said he is — a proud sexual predator,” she said.

Raquel Jackson-Stone, a community organizer in DC, explained why she was there.

“Donald Trump is actively pursuing an anti-woman agenda,” she said. “We’re out here to say women are here, we’re fighting back.”

If nothing else, the group succeeded in drawing attention to its cause. The scene of the commander-in-chief reciting lewd remarks on a giant screen tends to leave an impression, regardless of whether they occurred sometime in the past or not. While Trump has apologized and referred to the remarks as inappropriate ‘locker room banter,’ the words are still out there. As such, the controversy over what he said will never completely go away.

In a perfect world, the group will succeed in their quest to use this as a teachable moment. Trump’s remarks, in addition to nearly capsizing his campaign, gave rise to awareness on the flippant nature in which some view matters of sexual harassment and inappropriate banter or touching. Maybe seeing Trump behave in that way on a massive screen will help to drive that point home even more.
