Here's Why Emma Thompson Regrets Not Going On A Date With Trump

What might have been. That question pops into virtually everybody’s head from time to time, but the topic at hand can vary. Sometimes, it has to do with old romantic partners, as well as the ones that you let get away before examining the possibilities more closely. Actress Emma Thompson has revealed that the thought has popped into her head, but the one that got away was one that she blew off. He’s a little busy running the country right now, but Thompson is wondering what might have been different if she didn’t dismiss his advances.

As Vanity Fair shares, Thompson discussed her run-in with President Donald Trump during an interview at the Toronto Film Festival. As she tells it, she received a curious phone call from the real estate magnate back in 1997. Ironically, she was filming the movie ‘Primary Colors’ at the time, which revolves around a run for the White House.

“In those old days, no one had called my trailer phone ever in my whole life. So I picked it up and he said, ‘Hi!’ It was Donald Trump,’” she recalled. “I am going, ‘Who is this?’ Because at that time, all I knew him for was his tasteless buildings. He said, ‘I want to offer you accommodations in one of my beautiful establishments and maybe we could have dinner sometime.’”

It doesn’t sound like she really had to give the invitation all that much thought.

“And I thought, ‘You’re ringing my trailer to offer me accommodations and dinner?! You’re weird!’ I just said, ‘Well that’s very kind of you. I’ll ring you later.’ And I just put the phone down and told everyone. It was a source of great amusement.”

Fast forward to today, and she’s not exactly remorseful that she passed on the opportunity to date Trump. However, it does cross her mind that things could be awfully different if she did.

“Now, of course, it is a source of amusement and kind of existential despair,” Thompson added. “Because I could have done something.”

So what would she have done? Married him and changed his ways? Encouraged him to leave the country? Told him she would break up with him if he even thought about running for president? What china patterns would she have picked as First Lady? What would’ve become of Melania Trump? We’ll never know, but it’s certainly fun to wonder about.

If we flash back to 1997 for a moment, the thoughts of Trump in the White House would’ve been considered pretty out there. While he has been whispered about as a possible contender for some time, that thought was consistently brushed aside as being far too detached from reality. Fast forward to today, and it’s a reality that many folks are still coming to terms with. It sounds like Thompson falls into that category, but it also seems like she’s awfully content with her decision not to take Trump up on his offer. No response from Trump as of yet, but we’ll keep our eyes on social media just in case.
