Jay Z Admits To Cheating On Beyonce - Therapy Helped Prevent The Marriage From Falling Apart

Jay Z and Beyoncé have been keeping quiet about their marriage issues - at least when it comes to interviews. The couple have bared their souls in their music.

Beyoncé delivered some shockingly frank lyrics about infidelity and revenge in her album 'Lemonade' in 2016. In 2017, husband Jay Z released 4:44, in which he lamented unfaithfulness and regret.

The 47-year-old music legend admitted on Wednesday that a real-life drama was indeed unfolding when the lyrics were written. He told a New York Times reporter that he'd been unfaithful to Beyoncé, his wife of 9 years and mother of his children, Blue Ivy and twins Rumi and Sir Carter.

Jay Z reveals that it was a difficult time for the couple, and he was struggling with scars from his past which led to the infidelity. He says his pain from his past led him to push away his wife.

"You have to survive. So you go into survival mode, and when you go into survival mode, what happens? You shut down all emotions. So, even with women, you gonna shut down emotionally, so you can't connect. ... In my case, like, it's deep. And then all the things happen from there: infidelity," he said.

Jay Z has never named the woman he cheated with, but Beyoncé once referred to her as 'Becky with the good hair'.

It was therapy that saved their marriage, says Jay Z, and part of that therapy was their music. Both poured out their hearts into their arts.

"We were using our art almost like a therapy session. And we started making music together. And then the music she was making at that time was further along. So, her album came out as opposed to the joint album that we were working on," he says.

"We still have a lot of that music. And this is what it became. There was never a point where it was like, 'I’m making this album'. I was right there the entire time," he added.

The hip-hop artist likens that time in their relationship to a hurricane, and says they found a place of calm inside of the storm. "The best place is right in the middle of the pain. And that's where we were sitting. And it was uncomfortable. And we had a lot of conversations," he explained.

Both, he claims, are in a much better place after dealing with their issues through their art. "And, you know, at the end of the day we really have a healthy respect for one another's craft. I think she's amazing," said Jay Z.

He notes that divorce might have been the easy thing to do. Instead, Jay Z says he grew from the experience with his wife and is glad he faced their problems head-on.

"But I think the most important thing I got is that everything is connected. Every emotion is connected and it comes from somewhere. And just being aware of it. Being aware of it in everyday life puts you at such... an advantage," he explains, noting that he’s moving on with this new awareness.
