Comedian Jimmy Fallon will get a second chance to poke fun at President-elect Donald Trump when he hosts the 74th annual Golden Globe awards this weekend.
Fallon was widely criticized by Democrats for his softball, non-confrontational approach when he interviewed Trump on “The Tonight Show.” He did not question the reality-TV-star-turned-politician about the angry rhetoric he used throughout his campaign, nor the constant lies and contradictions.
Instead Fallon asked to play with Trump’s much-discussed head of hair and just made a few kind of weak jokes.
In an interview going into the award show, Fallon said he wants the Golden Globes ceremony to feel like a “party,” and how he plans on bringing humor to bear on Trump at the event.
“If I hit somebody, it’s a very subtle hit, and everyone’s in on the joke,” he explained to The Hollywood Reporter. “I want to make sure everyone’s laughing and having a good time. And I’m hopefully going to book the people in this crowd the next week, so I’ll be edgy, but it’s all in good fun, and I know how far I can take it.”
Fallon went on to say that nobody needs to be nervous about what he’ll say. Given this Golden Globes show is so close to the inauguration, Fallon says Trump is definitely fair game.
“The whole night won’t focus on [Trump], but it will be a week before the inauguration, so it will be on everyone’s mind,” he noted. “It’s the first and maybe the last party that we’ll have in 2017,” Fallon cracked.
