Jon Stewart Jokes That He 'Blacked Out,' Wants To Know What Happened In 2016 Election

If you feel like the past year has been a complete blur when it comes to the world of politics, you’re not alone. One year ago, President Donald Trump shocked the world with an upset victory over Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton. While the results of the election have been in the books for some time, it often feels like the election cycle has never ended. There’s still an endless amount of bickering back and forth in regards to Trump’s merits and shortcomings, and that shows no signs of slowing down.

Is it really going to be like this for the whole time that Trump is in office? After normal presidential elections, the winning side gloats for a little while, while the opposite side licks its wounds. Before too long, everyone moves on with their lives and the election becomes an afterthought. That’s nowhere near the case this time around, as even the simplest political news items are completely blown out of proportion.

So how are we all going to get through it? Outside of the obvious answer of firmly committing to not add to the drama in even the slightest way, the answer may lay in a simple activity that just about everyone can get behind: laughter. There’s a whole ton of absurdity out there that both sides of the aisle can find some humor in - if they’re willing to put down the pitchforks for at least a little while, that is.

As the Independent shares, the former Daily Show host hit on some of those notes during a recent appearance at the annual Stand Up for Heroes benefit in New York. Stewart would kick things off by asking the crowd to help him fill in the blanks on the 2016 presidential election, as he had “blacked out.”

“What happened? Did my candidate win?” Stewart asked.

Stewart has made no secret of the fact that he’s not a big fan of Trump, and he articulated how he has a tough time understanding the thought process of his supporters.

“You know who I want to vote for is that very staid, professorial gentleman from Kenyan birth who has an articulate sense and is a bit standoffish, that’s the guy that I really love. But since he’s not running this year, I’m gonna check out the ‘grab ‘em by the pussy’ candidate,“ Stewart joked. “How do you even get there? What the f*ck, man?“

While you can be sure that joke may rankle some Trump supporters, we would imagine there’ll be more than a few folks on both sides that can find the humor there. Stewart wasn’t done, as he would explain that electing Trump was the equivalent of “putting our d**k in the toaster and we’re all waiting to see what happens.”

“Remember the good ol’ days when we were just worried about neo-Nazis marching through Charlottesville?” Stewart added. Stewart may have crossed a couple of lines here that offended Trump supporters, and it would be wise for other comedy stalwarts to avoid such landmines in the future. There’s plenty of stuff to poke fun at on both sides, but there’s no need to cross the line and insult complete swaths of voters. As with most things, there’s a huge opportunity in the middle right about now, and those that can hit the right notes on the comedic front will thrive as a result.
