People Outraged When They See Kendall And Kylie Jenner's Latest Handbag

Those Jenner girls just can’t seem to stay away from controversy. Whether that’s by design or not is open for debate, but the names of Kendall and Kylie Jenner never seem to be all that far away from the headlines.

For their latest trick, they have managed to create a stir about a new handbag that’s been released by their fashion line. As Page Six shares, the bag has an unusual source of inspiration, to say the least.

Kendall and Kylie have had some slip-ups with their clothing line in the past, but this one may take the cake.

“The Kendall + Kylie bag in question, the $150 Lee Leather Clutch, is designed to look like the foldable white paper cartons often found in Chinese takeout restaurants and features an exotic red graphic with the words 'KK Express Los Angeles, CA' circling a pouncing tiger next to the number three,” Page Six reports.

“The bag is part of a limited-edition line of the label available exclusively through Saks Fifth Avenue. Also part of the line is a coin purse designed to look like a fortune cookie.”

Ok, so beyond having what sounds like a ridiculous appearance, what’s the big problem? Turns out an awful lot, as a number of folks are up in arms about what they used for inspiration.

“As Teen Vogue points out, the Jenner sisters have been accused of cultural insensitivity due to the handbag design’s heavy reliance on imagery many associate, unfairly or not, with Chinese-Americans,” Page Six continues.

“The siblings are, of course, no strangers to being slammed for their label’s design choices. In the last few months, Kendall + Kylie was heavily criticized for using the likeness of legendary black musicians on T-shirts, allegedly without permission, and for selling clothing items clearly influenced by Chola culture.”

So why can’t the Jenner girls seem to get things right when it comes to their clothing line? Is it their lack of experience? Incompetent management at the helm? A simple desire to push the envelope to see what they can get away with? Feelings of invincibility due to their status, fame, and wealth?

to all of those questions would really help pinpoint what the trouble is, but it almost seems as if all of this controversy is just far too convenient to be considered organic. Could it simply be a genius marketing strategy going on that the rest of the world hasn’t caught onto yet?

That’s a possibility, but the pair is causing themselves some unnecessary troubles if that’s the case.

“But that’s not all! W Magazine reports that the bag also looks eerily similar to a similar Chinese takeout-inspired purse sold by Kate Spade in 2014,” PageSix adds. “As of press time, the controversial bag appears to have either sold out or been pulled from Saks Fifth Avenue’s website.”

Hmmm. So we’ve had accusations of ripping off other people’s stuff for their line, as well as accusations of cultural appropriation. Contrary to the beliefs of some marketing wizards, all publicity is not good publicity.

Eventually, the bad stuff catches up with you, and folks get tired of dealing with you. Hopefully, that won’t be the case with Kendall and Kylie, but they would be wise to keep that pearl of wisdom in mind.
