After Losing One Leg To Toxic Shock Syndrome, Model Prepares To Lose Another

Priorities can change in a hurry when a health crisis enters the equation. Whether that crisis revolves around you or a loved one, it has a way of placing things into clear perspective. All that matters is the health of the one that’s going through a rough patch, and other things can seem to be rather trivial.

In extreme cases, the crisis becomes all consuming, especially when there are no clear signs as to the direction things are going to go. That’s been going on in the world of model Lauren Wasser, and she’s been dealing with it since 2012. Wasser was at a party when she suddenly felt ill.

She decided to take off, and things got even worse from that point. She wound up waking up several days later being perilously close to death, as her organs were about to quit on her. So what on earth happened?

Doctors would determine that she had toxic shock syndrome, which is a rare complication of certain bacterial infections. According to the Mayo Clinic, it “has been associated primarily with the use of superabsorbent tampons.” Doctors would test the tampon that Wasser was wearing the night she fell ill, and they would determine that to be the source of her troubles.

Wasser’s infection led to gangrene, and she wound up having to have her right leg amputated below the knee. As the Huffington Post shares, Wasser has come to terms with what happened to her, and she’s been going out of her way to ensure her ordeal helps others.

“I think this is my purpose and I wouldn’t change it for the world,” she said.

On that note, she’s been raising awareness about the potential risks associated with tampons, and she’s been advocating for legislation that would mandate further research on feminine hygiene products. She’s been very upfront about her experiences, and she took to social media in the aftermath of a recent interview to draw even more attention to her cause.

“Thank you @instylemagazine for the interview and for allowing me to use my voice to educate and bring more awareness to TSS. Hopefully this interview will inspire anyone doubting themselves or their situation, and to give them faith and to help them believe (link in my bio) #itsnotrareitsreal #anythingispossible // photo by my @camraface,” she wrote.

The traumatic experience has obviously changed Wasser’s perspective on things, and she’s not out of the woods just yet. She notes that she’s resigned herself to the fact that she will “inevitably” need to have her other leg amputated, and that could happen as soon as a few months from now. Wasser also explained that she’s in “excruciating pain” and needs to have constant treatment on the damage that has been done to her other foot.

“My legs were everything,” she said. “I had no idea what my life would be like without them.”

It’s quite clear that Wasser’s life has been flipped upside down by this unfortunate turn of events, and it’s pretty remarkable that she can find the strength to focus on helping others when her own plate is so full. It’s incredibly admirable, and we sincerely hope that she’s successful in her efforts to draw even more attention to her cause.
