Brave Four-Year-Old Boy With Terminal Cancer Tells Mom He Loves Her One Last Time

A young man named Nolan began to suffer a stuffy nose in September of 2015. It seemed like just a normal cold; however, within a couple of weeks, Nolan was having difficulty breathing and cold medicines were not helping.

Then after a couple of months, the doctor determined that a tumor was actually causing the blockage in his airway. Unfortunately, it turned out that Nolan was suffering from rhabdomyosarcoma, a very rare form of cancer that is aggressive and highly resistant to all treatments.

His mom Ruth decided it was important to share the stark reality of the disease, so she documented his final months.

She posted a photo of Nolan sleeping on the bathroom floor on Facebook. He was scared to leave his mom’s side, so he had to be close to her even when she took a shower.

Nolan had all the latest treatments for his tumor, but the cancer spread all over his body. A cancer metastasizing to that extent cuts the chances of survival in half from 40% to 20%.

When Nolan went to the hospital for the last time, he hadn’t eaten for days because he would constantly throw all the food back up.

Ruth’s touching FB post describes their final days at the hospital:

“I sat down with him and put my head up against his and had the following conversation:

Me: Poot, it hurts to breathe doesn’t it?

Nolan: Weeeelll…. yeah.

Me: You’re in a lot of pain aren’t you baby?

Nolan: (looking down) Yeah.

Me: Poot, this Cancer stuff sucks. You don’t have to fight anymore.

Nolan: (Pure Happiness) I DONT??!! But I will for you Mommy!!

Me: No Poot!! Is that what you have been doing?? Fighting for Mommy??

Nolan: Well DUH!!

Ruth was completely stunned by what she had just heard. She figured she needed to make sure he meant what she thought he meant.

Me: Nolan Ray, what is Mommy’s job?

Nolan: To keep me SAFE! (with a big grin)

Me: Honey … I can’t do that anymore here. The only way I can keep you safe is in Heaven (My heart shattering)

Nolan: Sooooo I’ll just go to Heaven and play until you get there! You’ll come right?

Me: Absolutely!! You can’t get rid of Mommy that easy!!

Nolan: Thank you Mommy!!! I’ll go play with Hunter and Brylee and Henry!!”

When the doctors told the parents that Nolan only had a day or two left, they considered going home to spend one last night together. But just when they started to pack up and get ready to go, Nolan took his mom’s hand and said it was ok to just stay at the hospital.

“My 4 year old Hero was trying to make sure things were easy for me….,” Ruth writes on Facebook.

The FB post went on:

“About 9:00pm we were watching YouTube in bed (Peppa Pig actually) and I asked Nolan if I could get in the shower, as I was not allowed to leave him and Mommy had to be touching him at all times.

He said ‘Ummmm ok Mommy. Have Uncle Chris come sit with me and I’ll turn this way so I can see you.’

Then I ran and jumped into bed with him and put my hand on the right side of his face. Then a miracle that I will never forget happened….

My angel took a breath, opened his eyes, smiled at me and said ’I love you mommy’."

Unfortunately, Nolan passed away shortly after. His mother wants his incredible strength and perseverance to be an inspiration to all.
