Complete Stranger Saves Teenager's Life When He Goes Into Cardiac Arrest During Breakfast

A young man was enjoying his breakfast when everything took a terrible turn.

Robert Brown III, a 15-year-old teenager from Sterling Heights, Michigan, without warning, collapsed. Luckily, a stranger was on hand to administer CPR, likely saving the boy’s life. After being taken to the hospital, doctors determined that the young boy had entered cardiac arrest midway through breakfast.

Robert’s father was paying the breakfast bill at the Sterling Heights restaurant ‘The Country Cabin’ when he heard the crash of breaking glass. When he turned around, he was horrified to see his son thudding to the ground unconscious.

Other customers at the restaurant began exclaiming at the sight of Robert’s collapse. Realizing that time might be short, Robert’s father and other restaurant goers began yelling to see if anyone in the surrounding area knew CPR. Luckily, another customer, Susan Pendygraft, was on hand to deliver life-saving CPR to the boy. Ms. Pendygraft – who had only finished her CPR course earlier that year – managed to keep Robert alive until three police officers and an ambulance arrived.

“I must have paid attention and I did what I was supposed to do and did it well because he’s here and he’s alive,” Pendygraft said to reporters from WXYZ. The Chief of the Sterling Heights Fire Department, Chris Martin, was full of praise for Ms. Pendygraft, telling WXYZ how the brave woman had stepped up when others might have frozen. Robert allegedly recalls seeing her face as he drifted out of consciousness. “She came and brought me back to life and I am happy,” said the young man. “I always have a smile on my face.”

Chief Martin also highlighted the often-overlooked actions of the three police officers who first responded to the 9-11 calls. "She was doing CPR from when the three police officers arrived and they took over care from her until firefighters arrived. And that teamwork saved that young man's life. He is making a full recovery right now."

Robert’s father has enormous gratitude to both Ms. Pendygraft and the first responders, telling WXYZ: “I’m just happy that she was there at the right time. She was there and brought me back to life and I’m here to this day.”

At this stage, the Brown family have not met back up with Ms. Pendygraft, but the grateful teenager and his father are currently attempting to set up a personal meeting in the future. Further details about Robert’s mysterious cardiac arrest are scarce. It remains unclear if doctors were able to ascertain the cause of his collapse and subsequent near-death experience.

Online commentators have flocked to praise Ms. Pendygraft for her courage and quick-thinking. “Thank you Susan for saving a life,” said ‘TexasVulcan’ on ABC, adding: “Too many of us may be called on to do the same some day. Will we know what to do? I hope so. I used to insist that my Boy Scouts and Cub Scouts learn these techniques as I always felt I would be the most likely recipient.”
