As Daughter Is Dying, Mother Refuses To Call For Help Because Her Minutes Are Low

Police in Texas were shocked when a woman walked into the police station carrying her unresponsive child. According to the mother, the child had fallen several times in the last few days. When asked why she didn't call an ambulance, the mother said was 'low on cell phone minutes'.

Jessica Briones of San Antonio brought her four-year-old daughter, Olivia, into the police station on September 5. Police were shocked by the condition of the young girl, and the fact that the mother had not simply called an ambulance to the home. By her appearance, the girl looked like she had multiple injuries.

The 34-year-old mother told police her daughter had been vomiting earlier and wouldn't wake up that morning. Olivia was rushed to University Hospital. She had numerous injuries on the head, face and arms. Doctors found swelling and bleeding in the child's brain in several places.

The next day, the poor little girl passed away from her injuries.

Briones was questioned by investigators and told police that Olivia had fallen several times in the days leading up to her death, and was always hurting herself. She reported that Olivia had fallen on September 1, just five days before her death, and hit her head in the accident. She also said that she accidentally slammed the young child's arm in a door.

They asked the mother why she didn't call 911, and she said she couldn't find her phone. She also complained that her minutes were low.

An exact cause of death yet has not been determined, but doctors say that the injuries to Olivia's head are consistent with being stuck in the head. A medical examiner found scars on the child's scalp, a black eye, swollen wrists and arms, a swollen nose, one deflated lung, fractured vertebrae and abrasions on her head. The flap of skin that connects the lip to the gum was also torn on the child.

The mother seemed completely baffled by the extent of her daughter’s injuries. She denied knowing how the young girl had received so many wounds, and she couldn’t explain why the child’s head wounds were so severe.

Briones was arrested and charged with doing bodily harm to her daughter, which has been upgraded to intentional injury to a child. That charge, if convicted, could result in a sentence of up to 99 years in prison. The investigation is ongoing, however, and pending autopsy result, the charges could be upgraded.

The mother’s alleged excuses are wearing thin on investigators. Police are not making any comments or statements, however, until they get the details from the autopsy about the cause of death.

Briones is being held on $25,000 bail.

This poor child clearly suffered a traumatic ordeal in her last days, and somehow the person who was supposed to care about her most failed to protect her. Whether her mother gave her the injuries or didn’t protect her from someone else giving her the injuries, it was a terrible failure on the mother’s part.
