Doctors Fail To Figure Out What's Wrong With Girl's Eyes Until It's Too Late

Mistakes happen, but they can have deadly consequences when they occur at the hands of a trusted medical practitioner. Gaylene Robson has come forward about what happened to her six-year-old daughter, who would miraculously survive a horrible misdiagnosis by doctors in Australia. As the Daily Mail shares, doctors initially considered a dangerous brain tumor to be some simple swelling that could be cured with antibiotics and creams.

When her daughter’s eyelid turned bright red and got puffy, she knew something wasn’t right. That’s what led her to seek medical attention in the first place, but doctors told her it was a simple eye infection. She was sent on her way with some prescriptions, but she headed to an ophthalmologist for a second opinion. It’s a good thing she did.

“He sent her to get an emergency CT scan at the Royal Children's Hospital in Melbourne, which revealed that Stella had a bell-shaped tumour growing between her brain and eye,” the Mail reports. “It would need immediate treatment.”

“The tumour was growing into the orbital bone, the bone that surrounds the eye ... it was roughly 1.5 centimetres and shaped like a bell,” Robson explained.

Needless to say, her daughter would’ve gotten much worse if she hadn’t listened to her instincts.

“After two days of frantic consultations - which at one point saw six intrigued eye experts crowding around a single scan of her head - Stella went under surgery to remove the tumour. Ms Robson was told that Stella had Langerhans cell histiocytosis - an extremely rare disease with no concrete understanding of the cause and minimal substantiated research,” the Mail continues. “Entering through a minute crease in her eyelid, the surgeon successfully removed the cancerous growth with no damage to her tissue or brain. But a long road of aggressive treatment faced the young girl to ensure the cancer stayed away, starting with 12 weeks of intensive chemotherapy.”

Her daughter had to begin treatments just as she was getting ready to enter prep school, and that opened up all kinds of other problems.

“It was quite a little roller-coaster for her, she’d be emotional and hungry and tired, then she’d recover for a week and then it would be time to get back in and have another lot of treatment,” Robson said.

“If her temperature went above 38 (degrees) it was a trip straight to the emergency department,” added her father, Paul Robson. “We took her to ED about seven or eight times.”

It’s been a rough road for the Robson family, but their daughter has progressed well. She’s been cleared of the rare cancer for now, and there’s just a 20 percent chance of recurrence. It’s hard to imagine that the initial doctors didn’t order some kind of scan right off the bat, but thankfully Robson listened to her gut. Parents and other patient advocates always need to be mindful of doing just that. It’s perfectly fine to question doctors, as they can make mistakes as well. Left unchecked, that can have deadly consequences.
