Doctors Ignored This Woman's Concerns - Now She's Paying The Ultimate Price

A young, healthy woman started noticing some strange things about herself. When she went to doctors for advice, they told her that she looked just fine. When they finally saw it, it was almost too late.

A 30-year-old woman from Cheltenham was shocked after she was diagnosed with lung cancer, despite leading a healthy and active lifestyle. Vicky Veness, a personal trainer and fitness fanatic, continually visited her doctor with concerns over a persistent cough; however, her symptoms were repeatedly disregarded and put down to asthma. 18 months later, Ms. Veness revealed that her “asthma” symptoms were actually due to lung cancer. Ms. Veness shared an emotional post to Facebook, accompanied with a selfie that she took just four hours before the diagnoses in order to raise awareness that despite being fit and healthy, no one is completely immune to cancer.

It took doctors 18 months to finally diagnose Ms. Veness with lung cancer after repeatedly “brushing off” her symptoms as asthma. Ms. Veness, a personal trainer, fitness fanatic and non-smoker, looked incredibly fit and healthy, leading many general practitioners to presume that serious disease could not be the cause of her symptoms. In an emotional post to Facebook, Ms. Veness shared a stunning photo of herself just four hours prior to learning she had lung cancer. The photo shows the 30-year-old looking healthy, with a glowing complexion and dazzling smile.

“Just a warning that this post may be upsetting to read,” Ms. Veness began in her shared post to Facebook. “This photo was taken a few hours before I was diagnosed with stage 4 lung cancer. I'm 30 years old, a personal trainer, runner, non-smoker and healthy eater. When you have cancer, you won't necessarily look ill on the outside. The symptoms might be much subtler and only show themselves occasionally. Unfortunately, my symptoms were brushed off as asthma by many general practitioners,” Ms. Veness continued.

Ms. Veness had a purpose to sharing her story, hoping that by revealing her diagnosis, others would take their health more seriously and would follow up with GP’s on any unusual or persistent symptoms. "I decided it was important to share my post in order to highlight that cancer really can affect anybody, in any walk of life,” Ms. Veness revealed to FEMAIL. “The moral of the story is this, if you feel unwell for whatever reason, it doesn't matter how silly you might think it might be, see your doctor, question everything and keep going back until you get the answers you need. This has been the most emotionally and physically challenging week of my life, but now it's time to fight this!”

“Hopefully me speaking out will encourage everyone to see their GP if they have a persistent cough,” Ms. Veness continued. “When most people think of lung cancer they immediately imagine somebody who smokes. I want to make people aware this is not always the case. Because I do look healthy, lung cancer wasn't thought of as a possible reason behind my symptoms. It worries me that "healthy looking" people and non-smokers may be overlooked when diagnosing this condition.”

Symptoms such as a persistent cough, difficulty swallowing food and blood in your urine could all be indicators of cancer. If you have any of these symptoms, you should immediately contact your GP.
