During C-Section, Doctors Find Baby Had Close Call, And No One Even Knew It

A young Scottish mom recently had a difficult pregnancy, but she was relieved to have given birth to a healthy baby girl. The baby was born via C-section, but during the operation, doctors found something disturbing. The mother says she shudders to think of what might have happened had she tried to have a natural birth.

Rebecca Meldrum, a mommy blogger, had been keeping track of the numerous difficulties that she suffered through her pregnancy with her daughter Poppy. Making matters worse, after nine months of difficulty, doctors tried to induce labor and failed. Meldrum agreed to a C-section and was ready to put an end to the whole ordeal.

When the doctors found the umbilical cord, they were stunned to find what is called a 'true knot' in it.

"This knot was in Poppy's cord, a True Knot which apparently is pretty uncommon 1 in 2,000 babies I think the midwife said," according to Meldrum, showing a picture of the knotted cord.

This can happen in the womb if the baby moves around a lot and manages to go through a loop made by the cord. It usually happens earlier in the pregnancy, when the fetus still has a lot of room to move around. Doctors don't usually know about it until the baby's born.

A true knot in an umbilical cord, in most cases, does not cause any damage, but they can be extremely dangerous if they get too tight. Since the cord supplies the baby with life-sustaining oxygen, blood and nutrients, a knot can cut off the flow, putting the fetus at risk.

"If the umbilical cord becomes tightly knotted, there will be a reduction in the flow of blood, depriving the baby of oxygen which can lead to permanent brain injury. A problem with the umbilical cord could also cause the baby to be stillborn," notes Dr. Patrick O'Brien, spokesperson for the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, according to WatchThis.

For Poppy, it was a close call. The baby had to remain in the NICU because she was underweight and needed help regulating her breathing and temperature. Meldrum blogged about the emotional roller coaster she was on while Poppy was in the hospital.

"I can honestly say I have never ever been through emotions like I have been through these last few days & I'm sure will continue to go through until we are all home together," she wrote. "I've cried in a way I've never heard myself cry before, loud, ugly & almost primal need for my baby to be with me... I've stared into space for hours upon end wishing I was pregnant still, I've gone through every hospital appointment, scan & meeting from the last 6 months trying to work out how this could have ended up differently."

As Poppy's condition improved, though, so did the mother's condition. "I don't think anything could ever prepare you for not being with your baby after labor & delivery, but today I feel like I've turned a corner," she said. "I'm sure it's the tonic of skin to skin with Poppy but I'm feeling more confident, more ready to face NICU & want to get involved in anyway I can with caring for my baby."
