Here's Why The White House Looks Awfully Pink

October is Breast Cancer Awareness month, and we can expect to see all kinds of nods of support as the month unfolds. The White House got a leg up on things by acknowledging it right from the get-go, courtesy of First Lady Melania Trump. However, not everyone was real pleased with the efforts of FLOTUS. As AOL shares, critics quickly chimed in to blast her after she dropped a statement to explain the steps she took to help raise awareness.

The First Lady shared a photo of the White House on social media to excitedly explain how she was helping to bring awareness to this important cause.

"In honor of National Breast Cancer Awareness Month we lit the @WhiteHouse pink!" she wrote.

Melania offered up some more detailed thoughts on her passion for the issue in a statement.

"During October, we raise awareness and encourage people to take steps to reduce their risk of breast cancer," she said. "I encourage all women to talk to their healthcare providers about mammograms and other methods of early detection and what can be done to reduce that risk."

Not everyone was all that pleased with the efforts from Melania. In fact, some used it as an opportunity to blast her, or more specifically, President Donald Trump and his administration.

“In honor of Breast Cancer Month maybe you shouldn't take away the healthcare of millions of women who need it to fight breast cancer," shared one user.

“this breast cancer survivor sees it as an empty gesture from an administration ripping health care from millions #EmptyWords#FailureAgain,” commented another user.

While we can certainly understand that there’s plenty of opposition to the Trump administration on a number of key issues, this doesn’t seem like the appropriate way to vent those frustrations. The First Lady was doing her part to call attention to the issue, and a simple nod of appreciation for that is all that’s really needed. The debate over healthcare is a separate issue entirely, and it’s one that’s been argued about until many folks find themselves with a bluish complexion.

This being a political talking point, many other users quickly chimed in to defend the First Lady.

“America & the world alike adores & appreciates your voice in D.C.!! Looking forward to the next 7 yrs! Thank u @FLOTUS,” wrote one user.

“Our #WhiteHouse is beautiful in #Pink, and I have a cousin who has just been diagnosed with #BreastCancer for the second time. This means so much! Thank you.#BreastCancerAwarenessMonth,” shared another commenter.

While we acknowledge that the current political environment is quite toxic, there’s plenty of times where the partisan sniping goes way overboard. Perhaps that’s just a reality of today’s day and age, but that doesn’t mean we have to like it. We can all do our part to make things a little better in that regard, and we’ll hold out hope that the bickering will eventually die down to a dull roar. In the meantime, kudos to the First Lady for helping to draw attention to such an important issue, and we encourage her to do even more to raise awareness.
