Little Boy Who Grew Out Hair To Donate To Cancer Patients Gets Terrible News

When Vinny Desautels told his parents that he was growing his hair longer so he could donate it to cancer patients and survivors, they were stunned, both shocked and proud. Despite being mocked at school, 7-year-old Vinny wasn’t bothered, growing his hair for 2 years and eventually donating 13 inches to cancer patients in need.

The following events show just how unfair life can be. In a horrifying turn of events, Vinny has since become one of the patients he was trying to help. The news came after Vinny was diagnosed with stage 4 cancer.

According to CNN, Vinny is suffering from Ewings sarcoma – a tumor that grows in soft tissue or bone. Vinny’s father, Jason Desautels, tells CNN that his son is due to begin chemotherapy and undergo a bone marrow biopsy on Monday.

The second-grade student’s parents found out about the tumor after Vinny came home from school complaining about pain in his knee. Initially, doctors thought that the young boy was just complaining about allergies. However, after a specialist ran a round of tests, the tumor was found and diagnosed as cancerous.

Since the diagnosis, Vinny’s knee pain has worsened and he has begun to suffer from squinty eyes.

"We know it's cancer, stage 4, because it spread in two different locations and it's aggressive," says Mr. Desautels. "Now we're trying to figure out what we're dealing with so we can come up with a plan."

Unsurprisingly, Vinny’s parents – who have both taken time off work to care for their son – are finding it difficult to balance medical bills, mortgage payments and everyday spending. "We're all right but we're just a blue-collar family and we work to live comfortably," emphasized Mr. Desautels. "We're very thankful but I don't want to lie to people: The circumstances are terrible. I'd rather have healthy kid."

After a CNN report revealed that Vinny has previously donated his hair to cancer patients, the public rallied around the struggling family. When the boy’s grandparents began a fundraising campaign, they managed to raise more than $50,000 in the first few days.

The response from social media has been similarly heartwarming. Here are some of the most recent messages of support from Facebook users around the world.

“What a lovely little boy his parents must be very proud of him, but so sad that he now has that dreadful disease too i hope he gets better god bless him x,” wrote Delia King.

“So sad my thoughts and prayers are with him and his family trying to help other kids with cancer and now he has cancer what a terrible twist of fate,” commented Jean Neuhaus. “May God watch over you with a healing hand!!!”

“Truly heartbreaking may he get well soon and live a happy healthy life,” agreed Binte Aslam, adding: “His left eye seems shorter even before his diagnosis...sort of bags under his eyes... something for all parents to watch out for?”
