Mom Applies Sunscreen To Young Son, Makes Shocking Discovery That Might Have Saved His Life

Good parents are always doing whatever it takes to help protect their children from harm. From the time a child is born, parents are installing car seats and outlet protectors.

As kids get older, parents cut up food so it's too small to choke on and hold a child's hand while crossing the street. Of course, when it comes time for those family outings, moms and dads are there to slather on the sunscreen to protect their child from a burn - or something worse.

One mom doing the right thing found that something worse.

Shashanah Woodward was out with her son, Brenden, and it was time to put on that sunscreen. Usually, Woodward opts for the easier, neater stick sunscreens so that she can give her 5-year-old the U.V. protection he needs without making a mess. On that day, however, she was out of the stick and had to apply the sunscreen the old-fashioned way: with her hands.

It's a really good thing she did. Woodward was rubbing the lotion on Brenden's face when she came across something unusual. She felt a slight bump on his cheek under his skin.

She took a good look at her son. She couldn't see any signs of that bump, but when she rubbed his cheek she could feel it was there. Kids are always getting bumps and bruises, but something just didn’t feel right about this one.

Woodward asked her little boy if he knew about the bump. Had he accidentally bumped something, or smacked himself in the face with a toy? Nope, Brenden didn't know what it was.

The mom was worried about what she felt and made a smart call. She took Brenden to the doctor to get it checked out. The doctor was concerned about it as well and quickly scheduled Brenden for a biopsy. That’s not something that any parent wants to hear, but better safe than sorry, as the saying goes.

The lump turned out to be cancerous. Brenden was in the early stages of rhabdomyosarcoma, a cancer of the muscle tissue. He's now undergoing radiation treatments, which are expected to go on for the next 42 weeks.

The young boy's prognosis looks good, though, thanks to the mom catching the cancer in the early stages. The mom shudders to think if she hadn’t been rubbing that lotion on her son’s sweet face that day how bad things could have gotten before the problem became visibly noticeable.

Woodward says her story really made a lot of people think. “All my friends, all of the doctors we talk to, they go home and they check their kids," she says.

It's important as a parent to be vigilant and to get kids to a doctor when something suspicious arises. Waiting can be like playing a game of Russian roulette. The odds of things going okay might be in your favor, but you don’t really want to take the chance of getting unlucky.
