Mom Shares Son's Medical Expenses To Illustrate Risks Of New Healthcare Bill

According to CNN, more than 22 million people are going to lose their health coverage by next year if the Affordable Care Act (Obamacare) is repealed and replaced with the American Health Care Act (Trumpcare). Even for those who don't lose coverage, out-of-pocket costs are expected to skyrocket. The GOP is literally holding the lives of tens of millions of American families in the balance. One mom finds this a terrifying thought.

Ali Ranger posted a hospital bill on Twitter, and it really puts the problem in perspective. Ranger says that her 3-year-old son has a number of serious health complications. These issues have resulted in him needing heart surgery and a pacemaker. She got her medical bill, and began doing a little math.

Ranger shared a bill for Ethan's latest surgery that required her to pay $500. This was her share of the full cost. The actual bill included a 10-hour surgery, a week-long stay in intensive care and another week in a hospital bed.

Can you imagine how much the cost would have been if the family did not have health insurance? "I'll save you some math; without insurance we would owe $231,115," Ranger tweets.

This would have financially devastated the family.

"He's had four of these surgeries, some more involved than others. The one before this had him in the CICU for three weeks," Ranger continued in a series of tweets. "We're hopeful that going forwards he'll need fewer and smaller surgeries, but this was not the last time they'll open his chest. We also regularly see a local cardiologist, and electrophysiologist for his pacemaker, a pediatrician, & immunology for his polysplenia. We're going to be adding pulmonology to his team after we give him a summer break. The longest he's ever gone between appointments: 5 weeks. He takes 5 different prescription medications multiple times a day. All of this adds up. None of this would be possible without insurance."

Before Obamacare, even with insurance, families like the Rangers would have had to pay a lot more than $500. Obamacare did away with caps that allowed insurance companies to deny coverage to those who were seriously ill.

Ranger points out that Trumpcare will bring back the caps on lifetime insurance payouts. This means that there are people who will be forced to choose between their own life, or the life of a loved one, and a life of debt and poverty. It's an unthinkable choice.

Late-night talk show host Jimmy Kimmel, in a rare moment of seriousness during his comedy monologue, shared the story of his own newborn baby's heart problems. It helped Kimmel realize the importance of this healthcare bill. "If your baby is going to die and it doesn’t have to, it shouldn’t matter how much money you make. I think that’s something that whether you’re a Republican or a Democrat or something else, we all agree on that, right? I mean, we do."

Let's hope so - the Senate is set to review a new version of the bill after the recess. Hopefully, they'll hear some of these stories on their break and think about what they're doing.
