Mother Nearly Dies After Doing Something Millions Of Families Do Each Summer

A woman's summer vacation has turned into a terrible nightmare after she decided to take a dip while spending the day at the beach. This simple decision resulted in her contracting deadly flesh-eating bacteria. The woman merely dipped her feet in the Atlantic, then she began suffering from the disease. She had to be air-lifted to a hospital to have the infected flesh cut off so that it won't keep spreading. The woman fears for her life, and other vacationers might want to be careful.

Bonita Fetterman was visiting Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, which is a busy vacation spot at this time of year. She was staying at a resort on the beach and went with her daughter for a dip in the ocean. She only put her feet in the water and soon after realized something was terribly wrong.

Fetterman contracted Necrotising fasciitis, a bacterial infection that destroys skin, fat and tissue covering a muscle in a short time. It's a bacterial infection that can start with bacteria entering the wound of a tiny cut or insect bite. It's quite serious and can be deadly.

The organism is usually found in warm sea waters, or in seafood that lurks in those waters, such as oysters and other types of shellfish.

Necrotising fasciitis is fairly uncommon, and, usually, the only people affected by it have compromised immune systems already. It can spiral out of control very quickly, however, and if not immediately treated it can be fatal.

Fetterman's daughter, Marsha Barnes Beal, posted a plea for her mother on Facebook. "All prayer warriors: Please remember my Mama, Bonita Fetterman in prayer. She was airlifted to Chapel Hill earlier today. She's now in ICU, heavily sedated and on a breathing machine."

Beal reports her mother is stable, but that surgery is her only option to stop the spread of the bacteria and save her life.

Beal posted harrowing photos of her mother's leg, which is red and blistered.

The city of Myrtle Beach doesn't want people to panic. They say that Fetterman is the only reported case of someone contracting a dangerous bacterium, and Fetterman's family has yet to contact them in any official capacity. The city put out a public service notice, saying, “Our ocean water quality is tested twice weekly, with excellent results. If we can determine where such contact may have occurred, we can order additional water quality tests to determine whether any connection exists."

City officials want to know exactly where Fetterman entered the water so they could text the specific location to see if there is a connection between the beach water and the infection.

On Thursday Morning, Beal revealed on Facebook that Myrtle Beach city officials requested that she modify her initial post to add that her mother had an open wound prior to entering the ocean. “Because of such an unGodly society that doesn’t understand the difference between a special prayer request and a Top Story Headline, and are more concerned about legally covering their butts, I’ve been asked by city officials to edit my post and to [clarify] that my Mama already had an open wound [sic],” she explained.

Beal said that her mother did have a small open wound, which was caused by a chair on the hotel balcony being blown into her mother's legs by a gust of wind.

Mark Kruea, a spokesperson for Myrtle Beach, denies asking Beal to alter her post. “We have not asked her to put anything in particular in it,” he said. “We have asked for additional information, but no, we have not suggested or told her to modify her post in any way.”
