New Zealand Woman Dies From Bacterial Infection Mere Hours After Her Wedding

Shakespeare himself couldn’t have written a sadder or more tragic ending to Jamieka McCarthy Harford’s all too short life. Media sources are reporting the barely 26-year-old bride, a resident of New Zealand, died from complications relating to a bacterial infection (likely meningitis) just hours after getting married to the love of her life.

The reports note that Jamieka McCarthy Harford was rushed to the hospital after falling ill during her wedding ceremony last Saturday in Auckland, New Zealand, but that it was too late. The new bride was pronounced dead at the hospital.

A number of photos posted on social media show a beautiful wedding set on a spectacular, sun-drenched golf course in a coastal area 20 miles outside of Auckland.

The storybook wedding took place on the famous Whangaparaoa Peninsula, and the pictures show the radiant bride walking down the aisle accompanied by her father on a beautiful summer day.

Jamieka’s new husband Alistair said that his new wife’s sudden death was completely devastating, according to various news sources.

“Her passing was a huge shock to everybody to lose her so quickly and this has been incredibly difficult to process,” Alistair said, shaking his head and clearly still in shock.

He continued to say: “She was taken from us without notice by a horrible, deadly disease.”

A statement released by the family read in part: “Jamieka was so happy to be married and the wedding was a beautiful, happy occasion surrounded by love.”

The statement went on to describe Jamieka as “the most kind-hearted person in the world who loved life and she always put others before herself.”

The touching eulogy to the young bride concluded by noting that Jamieka was “a beloved wife, daughter, granddaughter, sister, niece, cousin and friend. She will be missed forever.”

Also of note, the Auckland Regional Public Health Service confirmed to local media sources that it is investigating the unusual death of the young woman so soon after her nuptials. The ARPHS statement also points out that initial testing suggests that Jamieka’s untimely death was probably related to some type of meningococcal disease. The ARPHS also notes it continues to work with the families and attendees at the wedding in an attempt to prevent further transmission of the potentially fatal disease.

Public health officials note that meningococcal disease is typically caused by bacteria, and is spread by close contact, such as living with or caring for an infected person.

The Whangaparaoa peninsula is just a half-hour north of Auckland by car, and has become a very popular location for all kinds of activities including fishing, canoeing, boating, hiking, picnicking, and hosting events such as weddings. Note that Whangaparaoa means "Bay of Whales" in the native Maori language, and pods of orca and dolphin are seen all the time in the waters around the Whangaparaoa Peninsula.

Whangaparaoa is also famous for its amazing beaches, and justifiably so. Among the more than a dozen beaches dotting the shoreline of Whangaparaoa, Thorne Bay, Big Manly Beach, Waiake Bay, and Hatfields Beach, and Churchill Reserve are often mentioned as top surf and sand destinations.
