Pregnant Woman Discovered Her Itching Belly Was Actually A Serious Hormonal Condition

A woman named Christina DePino, who was very pregnant, began to complain on social media one day about how much her large belly was itching. A number of friends commented on DePino’s post and told her that the itching belly might be a hormonal condition known as cholestasis, which impacts the gallbladder of the pregnant mom and can cause the baby to be injured or die in utero if the condition is not detected.

“What had started as a kind of an all over itch focusing on my stomach began to become more pronounced on the palms of my hands and the soles of my feet,” DePino commented in an interview. “It got to the point that I could no longer sleep at night … my arms and legs were bleeding from all the scratching.”

After the input from her social media friends about cholestasis, DePino, who was 35 weeks pregnant at the time, decided to go ahead and talk to her doctor and do some diagnostic testing. Just a few days later DePino was officially diagnosed with intrahepatic cholestasis and her doctor suggested that she be induced into labor at 37 weeks to reduce the risk to the baby’s health.

Then on March 28th, DePino delivered a healthy baby girl at 37 weeks and 2 days along in her pregnancy.

As several of DePino’s friends pointed out, sometimes complaining on Facebook definitely pays off.

“As soon as I was holding my beautiful baby girl in my arms, all I could think was, ‘What if?'” DePino remarked, noting she was grateful for those who shared their comments.

“What if I had not complained on Facebook? What if no one had told me?"

She said, "All I could think was that I had to let other women know. I didn’t want any of them to wonder what had happened to their perfectly healthy baby.”

DePino is on a mission to spread knowledge about the dangers of cholestasis. Her moving post has been shared more than 25,000 times to date:

“If your pregnant & your itching REALLY bad, don’t ignore it!! Started having severe itching a few weeks ago, (it was keeping me up at night) thanks to a little Facebook complaining & the urging of Jennifer, Britney & Monica, I got the itch checked out & found out I had pregnancy Cholestasis, which is basically harmless for me – except for the crazy itching – But could have caused a stillborn after 37 weeks!!"

She continued, "I was officially diagnosed last week and had to get her out this week! We are so blessed!"

"Thanks guys for giving some amazing advice which may have just saved our precious girl’s life! Yeah, We are SO BLESSED & in awe!!! "

DePino plans to continue informing women all across the globe about cholestasis because it could help save the life of an innocent infant.

“I would like to urge pregnant women who are suffering from severe itching to be their own advocate,” DePino remarked in an interview with the media.
