She Had Excruciating Headaches, Finally Went To Doctor - Horrified By What They Find

Months ago, a woman went to the doctor complaining of increasingly worse headaches. The doctor performed a CT scan and found an abnormality he initially believed was a brain tumor. It turned out to be even more horrifying: a tapeworm was growing inside the woman's head.

If you think this disgusting diagnosis happened in some third-world country where water and food are unsanitary, you might be shocked to learn that the case came out of Texas.

Yadira Rostro, a 31-year-old mom from Garland, says the symptoms start nine months earlier. Simple headaches started getting worse and worse, until they were debilitating.

"Sometimes my sight was impaired... I could not see properly," she said.

Rostro went to a doctor who ordered a CT scan, and he found an abnormality in the results. The doctor thought that Rostro had a brain tumor, so he ordered a more refined MRI scan to get a better look at the problem.

The MRI revealed horrifying news: Rostro had a worm that had taken up residence in her brain. The condition when this happens is called 'neurocysticercosis', and it's caused by a tapeworm egg being consumed accidentally. The egg can get into the bloodstream and make its way into the brain.

"Her blood pressure had gone up and heart rate down, so we put in an emergency catheter to relieve the pressure and she immediately felt better. Then we did an MRI which further delineated the masses better and increased our suspicion for neurocysticercosis or tapeworm infection," said her doctor, according to the Daily Mail. "We consulted an Infectious Disease specialist at Methodist Dallas Medical Center who recommended surgical removal over medication. Once in surgery, we found between 6 and 8 sacs of larvae and removed them."

The doctors wanted to get a better look at what they were dealing with. "We did an incision at the base of the skull removing part of her skull, splitting the cerebellum and right then could see the sacs at the base of the brain stem," said Dr. Richard Meyrat, a neurosurgeon, to the Houston Chronicle.

Meyrat discovered that the problem was about to get worse. He found larval sacs in a liquidy space at the base of the patient's skull. He had to remove them with a microscope.

"They looked a little bit like eggs, and they have a clear sac," he explained, "And inside it, a small tapeworm."

Doctors think that Rostro picked up the parasite when she was visiting Mexico two years earlier. “She told medical staff she visited family in Mexico two years ago and believes she might have eaten contaminated food. The parasite traveled through her bloodstream and ended up in her brain instead of going through her gastrointestinal tract,” said her doctor.

While the very notion of having worms in your brain might make your skin crawl, Rostro is actually taking it in stride. She's just happy to have relief now, and looking forward to getting on with her life.

"I think she’s just happy to be alive" Meyrat said. "Her headaches are gone, and she's feeling better."
