When Her Son Started Getting Sick, She Couldn't Imagine Why - Then She Saw Behind The Wall

One mom in Arizona couldn't figure out why her one-year-old son was always getting sick. The tot kept coming down with one illness after another, and had a lot of respiratory infections. He'd wheeze, and sneeze and his symptoms were similar to asthma, but only when he was home.

When she took him out, he seemed to be much better, and would run around like other kids.

The mom decided to get to the bottom of the problem and couldn't believe what she found: mold.

Veronica Vera Jackson was puzzled by her son's odd illnesses, which seemed to only strike when they were home. When she took her son out to play he always seemed fine, but when they got home he'd start wheezing and acting run down again.

A friend suggested that mold might be the cause of the little boy's illness.

Jackson was a little skeptical about mold being the problem. She lives in Arizona, where it's dry. She thought of mold as a problem for warm, humid areas, not for deserts.

But sure enough, when she hired experts to look behind the walls, they found a big problem. She tore the walls down and found a lot of mold was growing back there. It was black mold, one of the most dangerous types.

The mom went to her leasing company in her complex and told them about the mold. She urged them to do something because of her son's health, but they refused to help. Apparently, there are no federal regulations about how bad of a mold problem you have to have in order to demand action.

For Jackson, her son's health was more important than anything else. She moved away to a new apartment so that he would not be breathing in the toxic allergens that were affecting his health so badly. He's improved, but not completely out of the woods yet. The mold has done some damage and he continues to struggle with asthma-like symptoms.

Jackson also has had to fight her former complex because they reported her to credit agencies for breaking her lease. She's had to fight to get the bad mark off her credit report.

Mold can be serious, especially for young children, the elderly, or people with compromised immune systems. Often it will mimic cold and flu symptoms, so people go on and off suffering from mold allergies for years and just think they are getting a lot of little bugs.

More exposure just weakens one's resistance, and continued exposure can end up compromising a person's immune system very seriously.

On a non-porous surface, such as on sealed tiles or on counters, mold can be cleaned away easily with a little bleach spray. When it begins to penetrate a porous surface, such as wood or drywall, removal isn’t so easy and can be dangerous.

Homeowners are urged to hire experts to do it. It can be costly, but not as costly as letting the mold continue to affect your health.
