Surrogate Mom Became Pregnant With Two Babies - One Was Her Own

A California woman decided to rent out her womb to another couple so they could have a baby. The mom had hoped to buy her own family a home, and thought she could do it with the money she earned as a surrogate. When she became pregnant, the doctors told her she was having twins for the couple. It turns out, though, that the babies weren't related at all.

Jessica Allen was the mother of two healthy children, so she thought she'd make a good surrogate for another couple. In April, she was matched with a Chinese couple who hired her to carry their child. The Chinese couple's fertilized egg was placed in Allen's womb and she became pregnant.

The doctors told Allen later that she was having twins. She thought the eggs had split in the womb, but when the babies were born, to everyone's surprise, they were not related. One baby belonged to the Chinese couple. The other baby belonged to Allen.

It's a rare incident of what doctors call superfetation. It happens when a pregnant woman continues to ovulate and becomes pregnant a second time. The second embryo can be fertilized and the two babies can grow side-by-side together in the womb, even though they have different gestational ages.

In some cases, they can have different biological fathers. There are rare cases in which a woman has given birth to two babies from two different men. In this unusual case, she gave birth to babies from two entirely different mothers.

Allen didn't get to see the babies after giving birth. She was later shown a photo. "I did notice that one was much lighter than the other," Allen said. "You know, obviously they were not identical twins."

Months later, Allen got the news that one of the babies was her biological son. She and her husband had conceived during the early stages of pregnancy when she was carrying the Chinese couple's baby. Allen jokes, "I carried my own child. I didn't know he was mine."

"I don't know how to describe it ... we were floored," Allen said. "We were like, how did this happen?"

Allen and her husband went through a complicated legal process, but were finally able to get custody of their own biological son. "He's just so smart, so intelligent," Allen said of their youngest son. "He's learning fast. He's got two big brothers to run after and learn from."

"You got to think like, 'Wow, we didn't know you were coming,'" said the proud dad. "We didn't plan this."

The young mom wants to warn other surrogate mom to be prepared for what they're getting themselves into. It seems anything can happen, so they should be prepared.

Ultimately, though, she thinks surrogacy is a great thing. "No woman in the world should have to live their life without experiencing the love and the bond from a mother and a child," she told ABC News.
