Woman Caring For 92-Year-Old Patient Leaves With No Notice

A woman hired to be the caregiver of an elderly man in New York decided she didn't want the job anymore. Without warning, she packed up and left the disabled man alone. She left a note behind apologizing to the man’s elderly wife.

Harold Longley has suffered from two strokes and needs round-the-clock care. The 92-year-old was in the hands of his hired caregiver, Jenna M. Boyle, until the 23-year-old decided to resign, effective immediately.

Longley's wife Barbara went to the grocery store to run a few errands thinking that everything was fine back home and that her husband was in competent hands. It turns out she was blissfully ignorant of what was actually happening. When she returned home, she found her husband alone and a note from Boyle.

"I want to apologize for leaving this way, but I feel I can no longer care for Harold," the note read. She explained she was 'not technically certified' under Longley's insurance. She thought his insurance was a private company.

"Also, I really feel like I need this time to get working on my service hours. I don't want to do this, and again, I apologize," she wrote.

Boyle told Barbara that Harold had lunch and his medication, and would be okay until 4 p.m., then she left the note and the elderly man behind.

Barbara was shocked and concerned. She called a nurse to see what she could do, and the nurse advised her to call the police.

Barbara was hesitant at first but ultimately agreed with the nurse. She didn't want Boyle to get in trouble; she did call authorities to report her to ensure the young woman wouldn't put another disabled person at risk.

Boyle was arrested and charged with endangering the welfare of an incompetent or physically disabled person. Thankfully, Longley was unharmed and didn’t suffer any health emergencies in the time that he was left alone with her.
