Woman Goes To Hospital For Pain - Doctors Stunned To Find 200 Stones

A woman was rushed to the hospital with excruciating abdominal pain. The woman was told for many years that she needed to address the issue, but she refused to have the operation that would bring relief.

She went on suffering from the pain for more than 10 years until she couldn't take it anymore.

Gallstones and liver stones, formed out of cholesterol and digestive juices inside the gallbladder or liver, are not an uncommon problem. Most people have some, and can go for years without them causing any problems at all.

Occasionally these stones can lodge themselves in bile ducts, blocking the ducts and resulting in inflammation and infection. When this happens, it's extremely painful.

One woman known as Ms. Chen suffered pain for years, but she was afraid to have the surgery to take care of the problem. By the time she let doctors perform the surgery, they couldn't believe what they found inside of her.

When the surgeons operated, they found more than 200 stones inside her gallbladder and liver. Many were tiny pebbles but some were as large as an egg. Piles of stones were removed from the woman, and at least one of her doctor believes he knows why she developed them.

Dr. Quan Xuwei, who was one of the woman's surgeons in the Guangji Hospital in Hezhou, says he's seen the problem in many other patients. He believes the 45-year-old woman had gallstones because she often skipped breakfast and ate leftovers.

Dr. Quan believes that irregular eating patterns contributed to the production of gallstones and liver stones.

Quan says when a person isn't eating breakfast, or if they skip meals, their gallbladder isn't shrinking and expanding as regularly as it should. This results in the production of stones.

Dr. George Webster from the U.K., who is the vice president of the British Society of Gastroenterology, disagrees. He told the Daily Mail that it's 'pure speculation' that dietary habits cause gallstones or liver stones. Dr. Webster says there's no evidence to support the hypothesis.

The cause, says Webster, is unclear.

WebMD notes that gallstones can be due to a number of possible reasons, including genetics, weight, gallbladder problems, diet, diabetes, high cholesterol, high triglycerides, cholesterol medication, rapid weight loss, fasting, birth control pills, menopause, pregnancy or hormone replacement therapy.

Older people, women, and certain ethnic groups, such as Native Americans and Mexican-Americans, are more likely to suffer from gallstones as well.

Most people with gallstones or liver stones will never even know they had them. But, depending on the size of the stone and where it ends up, it can lead to some serious health problems.

People may experience bloating, indigestion, heartburn, gas, pain in the abdomen or back, nausea, vomiting, and in severe cases, can get a fever if the stones cause an infection.

Usually with mild symptoms doctors will recommend the patient eat a diet to lower triglycerides and cholesterol and lose weight to avoid flair-ups. Some patients in the early stages are prescribed medications that dissolve the stones. Most severe cases will be treated surgically.
