Woman Has Headaches, Finally Goes To Hospital- Doctors Horrified By What They Find In Her

If you have a nagging symptom that just won’t go away, go to the doctor. Texas mom Yadira Rostro was doing that for her lingering headaches, but doctors had trouble putting their finger on what the trouble was.

She was initially diagnosed with a brain tumor, but it turned out to be something vastly different that was causing her so much trouble.

As the Daily Mail shares, these weren’t run-of-the-mill headaches, but rather the kind that were downright debilitating. The poor woman was dealing with headaches like that for nine months.

“Sometimes my sight was impaired... I could not see properly,” she recalls.

The tumor diagnosis was proven to be incorrect, and that would lead doctors to order an enhanced MRI. It’s a good thing that they did, as they made an absolutely nauseating discovery.

Turns out that her brain was infested with parasites. It gets worse. That led to a condition known as neurocysticercosis, which occurs when tapeworm eggs make it to the brain via the bloodstream.

Surgery was in order to rectify the gruesome problem, and Dr. Richard Meyrat has offered up some details on the procedure.

“We did an incision at the base of the skull removing part of her skull, splitting the cerebellum and right then could see the sacs at the base of the brain stem,” he said.

That sounds awfully unpleasant, but given the alternative of having parasites taking up residence in your brain, most patients would gladly take door number one.

“They looked a little bit like eggs, and they have a clear sac,” Meyrat added. ”And inside it, a small tapeworm.”

So how could this have possibly happened? Doctors have offered up their theory, and it will lead many travelers to have some sleepless nights.

“She told medical staff she visited in family in Mexico two years ago and believes she might have eaten contaminated food,” according to one doctor. “The parasite traveled through her bloodstream and ended up in her brain instead of going through her gastrointestinal tract.”

Of course, the doctors acknowledge this is not something that they see every day.

“It shocked me; it was certainly out of the ordinary, something I had not seen in a very long time, but I'm glad we got to her in time and could save her life,” the doctor continued. “The patient is doing very well and should not have any long-term effects from this.”

As for Rostro, Meyrat reports that she’s doing well in her parasite-free state.

“I think she's just happy to be alive,” he said. “Her headaches are gone, and she's feeling better.”

That’s fantastic news. For the rest of us, it’s further confirmation to seek medical attention as needed. To Rostro’s credit, she was doing that, and it still revealed some terrifying news.

Now imagine for a second that she avoided finding out what the trouble was. The end result would have been even more terrifying.
