Woman Suffers With 'Mosquito Bites' For 7 Years, Finally Learns The Truth

Over seven years ago, a woman in Oklahoma was outside mowing her lawn and doing a bit of gardening. The woman suddenly felt a bug bite on her ankle, and she dismissed it, assuming it was a mosquito. That was the beginning of a mysterious illness that would plague her for years.

The woman, known as Calvina, appeared on an episode of "The Doctors" to share her story. She says that the first day she got the bite, she ignored it. A few days later, she noticed a dark mark on her arm. It was itchy, but again she brushed it off as a bug bite.

Then it began to spread. First, the big, dark bumps spread all over her arm. Then they spread all over her body. The itching was maddening, and Calvina didn't know what it could be.

Calvina began visiting doctors, and all of them had a solution. Unfortunately, they were all different solutions, and nothing worked. Some told her she was breaking out due to nerves, some told her it was an anxiety condition, while others said it was allergies.

They gave her ointments, creams and medication, but nothing seemed to work.

Some doctors told Calvina that her condition was all in her head and that she was imagining the large, black welts covering her body.

In the meantime, the quality of Calvina’s life was quickly deteriorating over the malady. She had trouble working because she couldn’t stop scratching.

She had trouble sleeping because itches plagued her at night. She was embarrassed by her breakouts, which consisted of very dark, hard bumps that crusted over. The scratching would cause them to burst and ooze.

She sought to try and keep her affliction covered because people were afraid of her; they thought they were going to catch a contagious disease from her. She would try to always keep her body covered under long sleeves and pants.

The rash, or whatever it was, completely took over her life. Out of desperation, Calvina sought help on the daytime talk show.

"The Doctors" sent Calvina to a team of specialists around the country, and a battery of tests were conducted. The specialists finally found the cause: Calvina was suffering from not one, but two autoimmune diseases simultaneously. Each was affecting the other, and the result was the itchy rash.

Calvina said she'd felt hopeless for so long. Through tears, she explained that she spent the first couple of years feeling hopeful, but that hope dwindled.

When Dr. Sonia Batra gave her the diagnosis, she burst into tears.

Autoimmune diseases are when your own body's defense system, meant to fight off diseases, turns on you and starts attacking your healthy tissue. Luckily, Calvina's diseases, urticarial vasculitis and hypothyroidism, are both treatable. A specialist even offered Calvina a year of free office treatments.

Calvina said she has a "whole bunch of hope" now, and she feels blessed that "The Doctors" heard her when she reached out.
