Every Day, This 99-Year-Old Man Walks Six Miles to Visit His Wife In The Hospital

These days more than half of all marriages end in divorce, but clearly there are some people who have found the key to a lasting commitment. One elderly man from Rochester, New York shows his devotion to his ailing wife by walking six miles every day to visit her in the hospital.

The man says he's not looking to be called a hero; he does it for love.

Luther Younger makes the three-mile trek to Strong Memorial Hospital every single day, and then he walks three miles to get back home again. His wife of 55 years, Waverlee, is a patient at the hospital.

Nine years ago, she was diagnosed with a brain tumor.

At the time, doctors thought Waverlee would only have five years to live. Thankfully, the elderly woman has survived for nearly twice that long, but it has been a long and difficult road.

She's been hospitalized on numerous occasions, and some hospital stays have lasted months at a time.

When Waverlee goes to the hospital, though, Luther is by her side. Sometimes, when he can, he stays at the hospital overnight—even if it means sleeping on the cold, hard floor. But even if he can’t stay, he comes back every single day.

Whether it's blazing heat or freezing cold, nothing can keep Luther from his beloved. "I got a wife. I don't want to wait on the bus. I want to go up there to see my wife," he told a reporter with CBS News who joined him for his walk one morning. "People tell me to act my age — yeah, right. They're jealous because I don't drink, I don't smoke, because it's no good. I wouldn't be here [if I did]."

People in town took notice of Luther walking day after day, and have gotten wind of his story. For many, it's a touching tale. Some even regard him as a hero. Luther says he is not trying to be a hero, nor is he trying to show off how fit he is for his age. He just wants to be with his wife.

"People tell me to act my age — yeah, right. They're jealous because I don't drink, I don't smoke, because it's no good. I wouldn't be here [if I did]," he said.

"That's my cup of tea, and she's sweet too," he said.

The couple's daughter Lutheta says that her father has always called her mother by that adorable nickname.

"He's always called her that," she said. "He's always cared about her the way he does [now]. He loves my mom, He'll do anything for her."

Lutheta gets worried about her father's long walk, particularly in the heat. She doesn't like him walking alone. She does try to find him rides when she can. Ultimately, though, nothing is going to keep Luther away from his Waverlee.

"My dad says it keeps him alive, it keeps him going," Lutheta said.

Thankfully, Waverlee will be released from the hospital soon. Lutheta says she's been trained to help care for her mother at home. The family is struggling under Waverlee's high medical bills, however, so they have started a GoFundMe account for those who would like to help.
