Locals Furious After Playboy Model Desecrates Their Sacred Ground With Her Body

Mount Taranaki on New Zealand's North Island has been a sacred site for the Maori people for centuries. Members of the indigenous Polynesian people were the original settlers in the area, and Maori tribe members still live at the base of the mountain that their ancestors revered. The tribal ancestors are buried on the mountain and the sacred peak itself is considered an ancestor of the tribe.

A playboy model recently held a private photo shoot with her photographer boyfriend on the peak of the beautiful mountain, and locals are furious.

Jaylene Cook, a 25-year-old nude model and Playboy Playmate, visited the mountain with her boyfriend, Josh Saw. At the peak, Saw snapped photos of the model, which she posted to Instagram.

Cook was very proud of the photo shoot. "This was BY FAR the hardest thing I have ever done! Both mentally and physically, 2 minutes out of the car park I was already hurting, sweating and ready to turn back. But it's amazing what you can accomplish with the encouragement and support of your partner!"

The Maori people are outraged by the disrespect the model and her photographer displayed. “It’s like someone went into St. Peter’s Basilica in the Vatican and took a nude photo,” said Dennis Ngawhare, a tribe spokesperson, to the BBC. “It’s a sacred place and something like this is just very inappropriate.”

Mayor Neil Holdom of New Plymouth agreed. “They should ask themselves how they would feel if someone took a photo of themselves naked on the grave of a great grandparent,” he said.

Until the 1800s, no one went to the peak of the sacred mountain except for special ceremonies. When Britain colonized the area, and the Maori lost their land, they watched helplessly as the area was opened to explorers and tourists. Understanding that people have come to love and admire the beautiful spot, the Maori ask only now that people treat the land with respect.

“It’s only recently that we can have some input on what goes on at the mountain,” Ngawhare said. “We simply ask people to please be respectful. This latest case is just another really annoying example where someone obviously didn’t know how to behave here.”

Cook insists that she and her boyfriend were not disrespectful. “(The photo’s) not crude or explicit in any way,” she told the Taranaki Daily News. “We made ourselves knowledgeable on the history of the mountain. We were quite respectful. Being nude is not something that is offensive in any way. It’s natural and pure and it is about freedom and empowerment.”

“I don’t think the picture itself is offensive or obscene,” said Neil Volzke, another local mayor. “It is just inappropriate to take on top of Mount Taranaki because it is a place with a great deal of importance for the Maori community.”
