Michelle Was Not Barack's First Choice To Be His First Lady

A new book outlines Barack Obama's life before Michelle. Apparently, Michelle was not the first woman who Barack proposed to. Before meeting Michelle he was serious with another woman and he continued to date that woman even after he started dating Michelle!

When Mr. Obama was a young community organizer his dream for the future was already beginning to take shape. He knew he wanted to pursue politics and believed he could make a difference in the world. He even dared to hope at the time that he might make it to the highest office in the land, which was quite a lofty goal for a 25-year-old black man in 1986.

But at the time Obama had a different woman in mind when it came to who would make that journey with him. He was dating Sheila Miyoshii Jager when things quickly became serious.

Obama proposed to Jager but the then-23-year-old woman turned him down. Her parents did not approve of her getting married at such a young age.

Jager and Obama remained together and continued to date, but as they went on, and Barack became more ambitious about his political career, he began having second thoughts about the relationship.

“I remember very specifically that by 1987, about a year into our relationship, he already had his sights on becoming president,” said Jager to author David J. Garrow. She explained that the 'resolution of his black identity was directly linked to his decision to pursue a political career'.

At the time the future president was warned that he could experience backlash from the African-American community if he married a woman who wasn't black. Jager was a mix of Japanese and Dutch ancestry.

When Obama met Michelle Robinson at Harvard, the two dated while Obama continued to pursue a relationship with Jager. Eventually, Obama's relationship with Michelle blossomed as his relationship with Jager dwindled. They saw each other less and less frequently.

After that Barack didn't even talk about Jager anymore. He didn't even go into the relationship in his memoirs, 'Dreams of My Father'.

Garrow did go into it in his new book, "Rising Star: The Making of Barack Obama." The book outlines the future president's rise to power.
